In 1982, Samuel Fuller’s “WHITE DOG” created a storm of controversy that resulted in a minute theatrical release with no follow-up video until now.

What was falsely labeled an incendiary racist film that could provoke loyal life violence is instead a valiant anti-racist parable about how racism is learned or taught. In the movie the metaphor is a dog that has been trained to attack people with sunless skin.

The origin of the memoir is a harrowing suitable incident Romain Gary wrote about in Life magazine.

The movie myth is simple. Julie Sawyer (Kristy McNichol in her first adult role) is a young actress who, while driving one night, accidentally hits a white German shepherd on a mountain road. She takes it to a vet and tries to gain the owner. In the meantime, Julie grows attached to the dog. One night it saves her from a intruder who attempts to rape her. Later, the dog runs away and comes home bloody. On a movie state with Julie, the dog attacks a shaded actress. Julie realizes the dog has been trained as an attack dog so she takes it to “Noah’s Ark” an animal shelter and training facility hoping the dog can be deprogrammed in some arrangement. She is told that the dog is a “white dog,” one trained to attack murky people. At the facility, Keys (Paul Winfield), a dog expert sees this as an opportunity to examine if racial prejudice can be unlearned.

This low-budget film is sometimes heavy-handed but is immensely watchable and the restored uncut widescreen transfer is, as with all Criterion editions, made from the best elements available and is very crisp and well-kept.

Kristy McNichol has a natural, winning charisma on hide. Her top billing is justified and she has an easy, believable chemistry with the dog (actually five dogs were aged) .

Paul Winfield dominates the latter half of the film. His performance is focused and intense. I was reminded of a advantageous dog yarn in which he starred, 1972’s “Sounder.”

The mountainous Burl Ives has a dinky allotment as the co-owner of “Noah’s Ark.” It is substantial to hear that singular vow even if it is only in spoken words.

Director Sam Fuller had a reputation as a tough, cigar-chomping sometimes over-the-top, story-teller. He has been called “the tabloid poet.” Fuller did not skittish away from controversial issues and in fact helmed other films with racial conflict as a theme. He died in 1997 at the age of 85. This was his last film.

There’s a amazing featurette containing recent interviews with producer Jon Davison, co-writer Curtis Hanson (”L.A. Confidential”) and Fuller’s widow Krista Lang.

This is an illegal bootleg DVD. Criterion is working on a legitimately licensed version, which is obvious to have lots of enormous supplements and a genuine transfer.

Historically, ‘The Vikings’ is largely nonsensical, from its title sequence misapprhension of the centuries-later Bayeux Tapestry to its hash of the succession to the throne of Northumberland. But this film is big suitable fun! – a friendly swashbuckler with a sound dwelling, breathtaking art direction, costuming, sets, & cinemaphotography, & solid acting & direction.

Kirk Douglas gives a menacing yet humane portrayal of the Viking prince Einar whose falcon-disfigured milky contemplate inspires apprehension & loathing. Tony Curtis is, as far as looks go, perhaps a bit miscast but his energetic, seething performance amply redeems his presence. Ernest Borginine’s Ragnar is unbelievable – and one should preserve in mind that Borgnine gave Ragnar life long before this sort of Borgnine role later turned him into a caricature of himself; Ragnar gives the film terrific heart & vitality. Janet Leigh is objective…blooming, despite the script’s relegation of her female lead role into what is chiefly a state blueprint to motivate the action scenes. James Donald succeeds at fleshing out his character, but some of his lines are the only clichés in the script & yet he manages to rise above them with his careful elocution. And the ever-malevolent, narrow-eyed Frank Thring (Pontius Pilate in ‘Ben-Hur’, & a trudge in ‘Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome’) does yeoman service as the conniving, spineless pretender to the throne. Alexander Knox’s cramped role as the priest isn’t great dramatically, but it’s pivotal in the site development, & his diction is at its dilapidated excellence. Also memorable is the rune-reading Viking woman saga-teller whose moonlit face & sepulchral sing in the tidal crab-nibbling scene give the situation & its Norsemen their spiritual anchor.

The DVD’s special features are fascinating, informative, & delightful.

The supporting cast of Norwegian unknowns, all of them hulking & sweaty & masculine & lusty, lends a muscular depth to the action sequences & even, suprisingly, to the dramatic ones. Norwegian fjords & their ravishing waters & towering precipices provide a majestic setting for the action. And the dénouement at the English castle is one of the finest mediaeval assault & swordplay sequences on film, rarely rivalled, as for example, by those in the Charlton Heston film ‘The Warlord’.

Most of all, who can forget the long ships? Painstakingly recreated from the best archaelogical evidence available at the time of filming, these rakish craft are in themselves stars of ‘The Vikings’ & they give expansive evidence to why the Norsemen dominated the seas. The ‘walking of the oars’ sequence is not only current, but it’s one of the most toothsome bits of all of cinema’s swashbucklers.

‘The Vikings’ isn’t history, but it clear is top-shelf entertainment chock beefy of style & panache. Kids & grown-ups will all devour its scenic majesty & full-blooded characerizations.

Ah, a personal wish fulfilled is the re-issuing of this film onto the DVD format. Although I have long had the older VHS version of this classic fifties romantic sword and sorcery trendsetter, I was recently amused to catch it now listed in the DVD catalogue. Odin be praised! This was a formative film in my childhood, a monstrously approved box office hit that had all of us pre-adolescents involving ourselves for months clashing in attend yards using make-shift stick swords and purloined garbage-can covers for shields as we fought out our absorb imagined action sequences. Indeed, everything about this film is aesthetic and appealing; the wonderfully photographed sequences along the fjords, the jaunty and majestic music, and the quite authentic long ships and settings.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Vikings! Click Here

The cast adds to the fun with a star-packed line-up. Kirk Douglas looks appropriately Nordic (spruce trick for the son of Russian Jewish immigrants), and more than acts out the share of the Viking prince, Einar, the eldest son and heir to the barbarian legacy of his outrageously naughty father, Ragnar, played masterfully by a full-bearded Ernest Borgnine. Tony Curtis adds a limited blue-eyed soul to the cast as the star-crossed illegitimate heir to the English throne, and the quite attractive Janet Leigh (who at the time was Mrs. Tony Curtis) is the prized after English princess both the male principals have the bustle to merge with. The scenes inside the Viking lodges are hilarious; the sequences in which a drunken Douglas has to successfully slit off a lover’s braids from twenty yards with a battle axe without decapitating the lady in quiz to indicate she wasn’t unfaithful is spell-binding to experience. Terrific vicarious excitement for all of us overgrown kids in the audience.

The bottom line is that although none of it makes a whole lot of sense, unprejudiced remember; we’re talking serious action-adventure here! It is deliciously fascinating fun and gives bulky disclosure of all the rowdy Viking boys having a rousing apt time raiding, raping and pillaging, robbing and sinking other ships and finally storming a castle. And we regain ourselves going along for the slip. Why not? The cinematography is satisfactory, as is the musical procure. Although not terribly legal historically, the film does give us an curious examine at extinct lifestyles in terms of different cultures cohabiting not so peacefully in the north Atlantic long ago, circa the fourteenth century or so. It is a enormous diagram to utilize a couple of hours being entertained by some proper Hollywood masters of the genre. Luxuriate In!

This is one of the most powerful, tender, and well-acted films of forbidden love I have ever seen with an amazing cast with a beautifully interwoven soundtrack of the best Spanish rock bands in Mexico. I bought the DVD in Mexico in ‘02 just a year after its theatrical release without having seen it. I only asked about it since I was seeing posters all over the city.

I was glad that I bought it and showed it to my Spanish students. The result was nothing but tears and amazement at a beautifully told story of an impossible love because of an extreme difference in class. A teenage boy from a humble upper low class family falls in love with a upper class teenage girl; a love that is frowned upon in reality in actual Mexico City, where the story takes place.

Be ready to feel for the characters, understand the societal structure, and sense the frustration that the two main characters face while they struggle to be together for love. An amazing film for being a teenage love story… This was truly an Oscar-worthy film!

I Really luv the Movie it is an awesome Romeo & Juliet luv story with a verry sad ending. Great!!!

Infact I had never done that and when I purchased this one, I really had no choice into purchasing another version but I am glad I did. Ofcourse, I love the film for which I bought this product, but I was surprised I loved the second film it included, and all for a reasonable price. I am glad I made this pruchase. and it arrived just in time.

Of course, as with all specials like these, nothing is really solved, so if you’re looking for some startling revelations, go elsewhere. What you will get is all the necessary background info on the crimes, the suspects, the investigators, & the many theories that have developed over the years. They present an excellent sampling of authors & others to offer their opinions on the case, & let them offer their own ideas rather than assuming one set of ideas to be the truth (for example, some think the same ‘ripper’ killer was responsible for only three murders, while others put his count in the double-digits).

All in all, this is a very well-presented documentary, though it is more of a good starter for those new to the Jack the Ripper lore than for the expert looking for new information. If this sparks your interest, I highly recommend a book called ‘The Complete Jack the Ripper Companion’ by Stewart P. Evans (who happens to be one of those interviewed in this special) & Keith Skinner.

Well presented, especially the idea of Jack being a true unknown.A good addition to anybodys Ripper library.

The Pony Cart – the best episode of the season IMO. Aunt Martha Corrine comes to visit the family and upsets everyone. But she’s hiding a secret.

The Best Christmas – Olivia desperately wants the family to be together because she feels that this will be the last Christmas that the whole family will be together.

The Inferno – John-Boy travels to NJ and witnesses the Hindenburg disaster.

The Long Night – While visiting Esther in the hospital, Grandpa causes a disturbance and is banned from the hospital. Heartbreaking episode.

The Achievement – Grab your hankies. John-Boy travels to New York to check on the status of his novel and discovers it’s time to leave home.

I just love this series. This season 5 is being released just 4 months after season 4 was released. I applaud the studios for the quick release. Here’s hoping for the quick release of the rest of the seasons….all of them! Let’s not forget the movies that came out either. I applaud the fair price of these seasons too.

If you are like most Americans, you have probably never seen the original, unadulterated “Godzilla” (Original title “Gojira.” the name being a mix of the Japanese words for “gorilla” and “whale.”) More familiar with the campy, badly dubbed and edited version that graced TV screens in the 70s, we have seen Raymond Burr awkwardly inserted into the plot, anti-American political sentiments removed, and a horde of mismatched dialogs and ridiculous translations. Well, we are in for a real treat!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gojira / Godzilla Deluxe Collector’s Edition (Gojira/Godzilla [1954] / Godzilla, King of the Monsters! Click Here

The Japanese “Godzilla” is a serious film, starring Kurosawa veteran Takashi Shimura (”Seven Samurai,” “Ikura”). (In fact, two of Shimura’s films, “Godzilla” and “Seven Samurai” competed for the 1954 Japanese Academy Award for Best Picture.) Only nine years after the atomic bombs devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the threat of nuclear power was very much in the minds of the average Japanese citizen. Contamination, mutation, radiation…this was far from science fiction. This is the fire from which sprang the King of Monsters.

In a now-familiar plot, American nuclear testing has given rise to a 150-foot tall engine of destruction, breathing atomic fire and hell-bent on destroying Tokyo before taking on the world. Assembling the army, and all of the modern science Japan can muster, they battle the rampaging monster to the inevitable conclusion.

Standing along side the original 1933 “King Kong,” “Godzilla” is a classic monster movie, as well as a fine film in its own right. A suspenseful horror-drama, the acting, filming and special effects are all far above other entries in the genre. The black and white filming is used superbly, with the fire-cast shadows making the monster all the more menacing.

What is great about this set, is that not only do you get a restored and beautiful version of the original classic, you get an additional disk with the American edit complete with the stuffy professor Raymond Burr and the additional footage thought necessary for American audiences. It is a rare chance to compare the two versions, and see how politics in the US affected what audiences were allowed to view in the 1950s.

I have been waiting a long time for the original “Godzilla” to get a DVD release, and it is great to see it finally being treated with the respect it deserves.

Bottom line: If any of you grew up watching or watched recently: “Godzilla, King of the Monsters”, the chopped up “U.S.” version, take it out of your mind and forget about it. You are in for a cinematic masterpiece when this DVD releases. I had the honor of watching the original “Gojira” at a theater in my town. This is the film that started it all. When it was relased in the U.S., it was butchered, altered and changed into an average science fiction film with Raymond Burr fill-ins. He wasn’t even in the original film. The original “Gojira” is a sci-fi/horror masterpiece. The film creates feelings of dread and sorrow. The “original” version is a much darker, sinister film. AWESOME! The film also focuses more on the suffering of the Japanese people during the atomic age. The film makes you feel their tension and suffering. There is one scene where Gojira is staring at a big ben style clock. He is staring at it for no apparent reason. The scene makes you wonder what Gojira is thinking at the time. Then, for no reason, he tries to take a bite out of it. That scene alone changes the feeling of the film to something more than a lumbering beast destroying everything. MUST SEE! MUST BUY!

I love the film “Pollyanna” and have been waiting for the DVD for what seems like forever. I am very impressed by it! The picture and sound quality are amazing – so much better than the copy I have taped off TV from the late 80s. The film is presented in widescreen but I’ve realized not a lot goes on on the sides of the picture in this particular movie; in other words, you really don’t get much more action with widescreen than you would have with the pan & scan video or a TV-taped version. However, this IS the film as the director intended it, and I think that’s great. This DVD (actually two DVDs!) contains so much great stuff, I can’t even list it all here. Let’s just say amazon.com’s list doesn’t even get INTO what’s on this DVD. There are so many little treasures, and something for everyone – Disney fanatics, Hayley Mills fans, movie freaks, and (naturally!) Pollyanna fans. My favorite features so far are the featurette on Pollyanna advertising, the one about how they restored the picture/film to make the colors how they should have been, and the one about Pollyanna merchandise. Plus, the audio commentary by Hayley Mills and the (now late) David Swift is insightful and interesting. I would also recommend the “Parent Trap” DVD for more of the same fun. The Disney co. really went all out for these DVDs and they are well worth the money. And if you’ve never seen the movie – it’s an adorable family flick that I’ve loved for nearly 14 years. I hope you like it, too!

I was a bit nervous seeing this movie as I was scared it was going to live up to it’s title and be way too sugary sweet. I was pleasnatly surprised and even moved afterwards.

Pollyanna is a delightful movie that lifts the spirits and provides many life lessons without ever being preachy or feeling like a school lesson. I was genuinely entertained and even a bit surprised at the bold steps the movie takes. Would you think this movie features a preacher most everyone fears, or has a bittersweet ending? I thought not. Well there’s plenty more here to surprise you. Just give it a chance.

About the only thing I fault the movie for is being a bit too long. Some scenes just seem to go on and on, but that’s what chapter stops and the fast forward button are for.

As for the DVD presentation, it’s terrific. The movie looks and sounds stunning plus the second disc is just jammed packed with extra material. I was excited to listen to the commentary, but sadly it’s as sugary and full of fake emotion as the movie is not. Still the other bonuses are well worth the extra bucks and there will probably never be a better presentation of Pollyanna.

One name, “Joe Cool”, will probably jog some memories. Those who grew up in 1972 will remember the Snoopy as Joe Cool collectables. Well he makes his TV premier here.

This is Charles Schulz’s satire on politics with Lucy running the campaign, menacing voters to vote for her brother Linus, getting Linus to make empty campaign promises. Remember, this was the year of Richard Nixon.

Buy,Download, Or Stream You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown! Click Here

This originally aired as “You’re Elected, Charlie Brown”, and right after its broadcast the producers realized the folly of the title and quickly inserted “Not” for all re-broadcasts. The theme song lyrics do not have the “Not” in them. Unfortunately this edit must have been done to the master negative as this ‘remastered’ version has the revised title. But you can get a glimpse of the original title in the bonus material.

The second offering is 2006’s “He’s A Bully, Charlie Brown”. While I generally don’t like the later Peanuts Specials, this one has the spirit and feel of the earlier shows. I find it very enjoyable and forgot just how new it is. At summer camp, a marble hustler plays all of the beginner kids and wins their marbles. With the coaching of Snoopy, Charlie Brown comes to the rescue. Memorable moments are with Marci teasing Peppermint Patty on the phone by pretending “Chuck” is romancing her.

There is also a 10 minute “Making Of’ documentary” It is interesting tosee the voice actors as they are today. The background material about the story line is informative. Some material seems to be repeated from other Peanuts DVDs.

The sad thing is how little is included here! A single DVD should hold 6 to 8 half hour shows. But here we get only 2! THIS DVD RUNS ONLY AN HOUR even with the bonus material. 1969’s “It Was A Short Summer, Charlie Brown” would have been a good follow-up to the Summer Camp story. And the school themed “Play It Again, Charlie Brown” from 1971 would have been a good companion to the school election show. And how about the missing school science project episode from 1974 “Its A Mystery Charlie Brown”. Well, you get my point, the shows are there to fill out a DVD.

Irregardless to the reproduction of the analog-to-digital technology, Charles Schulz and family have produced one of the best written cartoons in the lifespan of America. I can count on my one hand the names of cartoonists whose work is embedded in my video/dvd/tape collection.

My only gripe is not of the Schulz’s library, but of the reproduction team who dispenses redigitized episodes on dvd with only two or three 24 minute shows on a disc! AND the fee for such is over the top charge.

Again, it is American. It is classic style, too.

Teen Titans has always been a strong series. This fifth and final season is a particular favorite of mine in that it features the Doom Patrol and the Brotherhood of Evil (BoE is in a number of episodes throughout the season). Now, I was not a Doom Patrol fan prior. In fact, I’ve never even read a Doom Patrol comic. Regardless, I simply love the characterizations of the team in the show, especially Negative Man’s deadpan delivery of his lines, as is so befitting his name.

Likewise, Brain having the Hawking’esque voice is beyond perfect. Here we have a brilliant and evil mind with no body to speak of that commands immeasurable power. I love the taunting coming from Brain sounding like a late 80’s computer attempting to create speech. It has a menace to it that one wouldn’t expect.

With the Brotherhood of Evil, and the Doom Patrol playing such a large roll in this season, the feel of the overall story arc feels a lot more Silver Age, DC Comics than the previous seasons, which for me is a good thing. While the Slade arcs are excellent, there is something I like about two super teams duking it out, 60’s style. There’s a grandness to that just feels, I don’t know . . . heroic in that romantic, adventure movie kind of way.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Teen Titans – The Complete Fifth Season! Click Here

There are some other really great episodes as well. In particular, I enjoyed “Go!,” a prequel episode that details not only how Starfire came to Earth, but also how the Titans originally formed their team. It’s great.

DC/Marvel has had an incredible run of quality animated hero shows, going all the way back to “Batman: the Animated Series” and this season of Teen Titans delivers as well. If your looking at a review for season five, I’m going to presume you’ve seen the show and like it, so I am probably preaching to the choir. It’s great. You know it. What else is there to know?

BTW, why in the world doesn’t every DVD box set/series in universe simply list the frickin’ episodes in the description? It always falls to a reviewer to actually tell prospective buyers what the heck they are considering buying. Does this strike anyone else as a bit stupid?

To that end, here’s a list of episodes contained within the series:

1. Homecoming Pt 1 (Intro the Doom Patrol and the Brotherhood of Evil)

2. Homecoming Pt 2

3. Trust

4. For Real

5. Snowblind

6. Kole

7. Hide and Seek

8. Lightspeed

9. Revved Up (This one seemed REALLY odd and jarringly outside the Titans Universe, but whatever)

10. Go!

11. Calling All Titans

12. Titans Together

13. Things Change

This is the final season of the hit “Teen Titans” show and it certainly doesn’t downgrade in quality, despite what some say. On the contrary, it’s one of the best seasons in my opinion. The final season’s episodes mostly focus on a single threat, the Brotherhood of Evil and their aim to eliminate all Titans globally. For once episodes not only follow the main Titans but also feature other Titans as well. It’s a nice change once in awhile to follow other Titan’s adventures besides the main group just for new perspectives offered by other heroes.

If you liked the previous seasons of Teen Titans, then definitely pick this up. You won’t be disappointed, as it’s on par with the other seasons.
