If you saw the classic movie “The Right Stuff”, and were interested in the rough-hewn female bartender who ran the local watering hole “Pancho’s Happy Bottom Riding Club” and put Gordon Cooper & Gus Grissom in their place at the bar at Edwards AFB, this film is for you. This amazing documentary has been years in the making, and was well worth the wait. The life and times of the legendary, inimitable, Florence “Pancho” Barnes is told by many of the people who knew her best, America’s finest test pilots of the era- including Chuck Yeager, Bob Hoover, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and Bob Cardenas, among others who worked & actually lived with Pancho. More than just a biography, this film for me was also a history lesson studying the early years of female aviation, as well as a glimpse at the men who risked their lives daily at Edwards, testing ‘hurtling pieces of machinery’, some with no method of ejection from when things went wrong, which they often did. The DVD is loaded with extras, including 2 versions of the film, the longer 64 min. one a little racier for adults, as well as 18 min. of bonus scenes, and a rare audio track where Pancho relates some of her experiences in her own voice during an interview for a student. Chock full of vintage photos & video, this film delves into the character of a woman who lived her own dreams and never gave up, an individual that many would consider larger than life. In her own words, “We have more fun in a week than other weenies do in a lifetime”. Narrated by Tom Skerrit, with the voice of Kathy Bates as Pancho, this is an entertaining, informative look into an era that could never happen again. A fine addition to the video library of the aviation enthusiast.

This was good in terms of trying to bring up a lot of material in a short matter of time. They brought up DuBois’ coining and abandoning of the “Talented Tenth” concept. It spoke of how Dr. King was assassinated right before he was trying to head a march that addressed poverty.

In style and format, this work is very similar to Skip Gates’ “Color Line” documentary. Just like with that work, I felt that this work was a bit “dumbed down.” Gates’ “Signifying Monkey” is no easy afternoon read. Here he asks questions of which I know he knows the answers. Yes, it is great that Gates can speak to elite and quotidian audiences, but still there’s a way in which these works are “beneath” him. If Mariah Carey sung a nursery rhyme, I would not be impressed the way I am when she belts out those high notes in her radio hits. That same feeling applies to Dr. Gates.

Still, class divisions are not necessarily new in Black American communities. Even pre-Civil Right Era, there were parties to which only the richest were invited. There were monied Blacks who looked down upon poor Blacks. The difference between then and now is that Blacks of all classes were not allowed to live in white areas or attend white educational institutions. I really wish the work touched on how classism and colorism intersect. That goes back all the way to who slaved in the house and who slaved in the fields. There is still a perception that rich Blacks will be light-skinned and poor Blacks will be dark-skinned. Unfortunately, that never comes up here.

Too, there were issues brought up outside of the discussion. One sees Dr. Angela Davis critiquing the Million Man March. What did that have to do with class divisions?! Gender divisions, yes, but class divisions, no! (I attended and I thought Black men across class designations were present.) Later, Dr. Gates says, “Harvard Yard feels more like home than Africa does.” And what does that have to do with class!? Also, please note that while Black women are present, this work is heavily skewed male and some viewers may find that highly problematic.

Countless interviewees here say, “Class is just as important as race.” I would never contest that. However, that contention has been misused by the Far Right and that piracy is never brought up here. Dr. Gates interviews Dr. W.J. Williams who first studied class’ equivalence to race. Unfortunately, the work never speaks of how conservatives used Dr. Williams’ book to say, “Okay, see, this is why one should never bring up racism again!” There are plenty of people who never once contributed money to educate working-class students, but those same people will be the first in line to shout, “Race-based affirmative action should be dismantled and only class-based affirmative action should be allowed!” Many Black youth in the suburbs embrace fashion and films associated with the ghetto. Dr. Gates’s new colleague Lani Guinier stated that working-class and middle-class Blacks tend to vote for the same politicians, so when Supreme Court Justices opine “Why can’t electoral districts be carved by class, rather than race?” they are wrongfully ignoring a category that still has salience. The avoidance of how class-based activism can be highjacked is highly problematic to me.

This movie is a perfect example of what Nobel Prize Winner Murray Gell-Mann calls “Quantum Flapdoodle”, i.e. an attempt to use Quantum Theory to support a metaphysical, even mystical, view of the world. This is often the result of confusing Quantum Theory with the interpretation of Quantum Theory. The premise of the movie seems to be to prove that we create our own reality through the observation of it. What follows is a lengthy pseudo-scientific explanation of specific elements of Quantum Theory placed in a light that supports a distorted mystical view.

Buy,Download, Or Stream What the Bleep!? – Down the Rabbit Hole! Click Here

One of the first and most glaringly aggravating points about this movie is the editing. Many of the physicists in this movie were filmed for hours explaining Quantum Theory and the mechanics behind it, but only select pieces of the footage were used out of context to make it seem as if these experts were supporting a mystical world view, when in fact they almost universally scoff at it. Coupled with that is the fact that many of these “experts” actually have no physics credentials, Quantum or otherwise.

But what about the science, you ask. Unfortunately, the science in this movie is abysmal. First, as mentioned before, they confuse the theory with the interpretation. This is simply because they advocate the “observation is reality” idea, which isn’t part of the theory. For a theory to be considered science it must be disprovable. Observation creating reality cannot be disproven simply because it would require an observer to validate, which would then invalidate the “theory”. So from the beginning we have a faulty basis for science.

Buy,Download, Or Stream What the Bleep!? – Down the Rabbit Hole! Click Here

Following that, the movie then cites its “proof”, which is also scientifically invalid. The first was the popular fable that when Columbus arrived in North America that the natives could see “the ripples in the water” but couldn’t see the ships. Nowhere in the movie does it state that this is a fable… its actually presented as literal fact (though I should note it isn’t implicitly stated in the film that this is a fact, it is certainly implied). This example fails to hold up to scientific standards for various reasons. First, its hearsay. There aren’t any written records or verifiable evidence supporting the story. Its a legend, pure and simple, and as such proves nothing. Second, it fails entertain the more logical reasons, such as the ripples appearing in the water before the ships had actually arrived, a distinctly logical conclusion.

The second example illustrated the “Maharisi Effect”. For those unfamiliar with the experiment, in 1993 four-thousand people practiced trancsendental meditation in an attempt to lower the crime rate in Washington DC. After the “experiment”, the data was analyzed, tweaked and otherwise manipulated to reveal, amazingly, that violent crime was down 18% (though the film claims 25). This was viewed as proof of the power of group meditation and positive thinking. Sadly, this example also fails to satisfy the rigorous criteria of science. First, there was no control group, and as such no way of knowing what the crime rate would have been without the meditation. This implies that the lowered crime rate could be the result of several, unrelated factors. Also, the crime rate was only 18% lower than what was predicted by analysis of previous criminal trends in the area. Violent crime increased from the previous year, just not as much as was expected by experts. Second, the murder rate during this time actually increased, so while violent crime as a whole increased less than was predicted, more murders were being commited during this time than were predicted. Thirdly, the panel who reviewed the data created by this experiment were followers of the Maharisi and could not be counted as impartial, non-biased observers.

The third piece of “proof” supplied is Dr. Emoto’s famous Water Tests in which he tapes words to containers of water and freezes them into crystals that, supposedly, create beautiful images when nice words like “love” and “thank you” are taped to them and horrible, ugly images when mean words like “I hate you” and “I want to kill you” are used. These words were tried in several languages and sometimes images are used as well. Unfortunately, Dr. Emoto’s amazing work has never been independently recreated in a scientific setting. In fact, the James Randi Educational Foundation has offered a $1,000,000 prize to Dr. Emoto if his data can pass a double blind test, a prize which he has refused to even attempt to claim.

After this there is a long discussion about cellular peptides and how these are responsible for all observation, emotion and, in essence, reality. This was the only part of the movie that had some sound basis in reality and could be backed up with science. It is 100% true that the chemical processes in our brains can vastly effect how we view reality, which is the basis of psychiatric pharmocology. The movie then moves on to use this as proof of the power of positive thinking, i.e. “Our brains control how we view reality so we don’t need mind-altering medications to be happy!” Yay! Except when there’s something wrong with our brain and those chemicals are out of balance. I’d like to see somebody tell Charles Manson that all his insanity could be cured by the power of positive thinking!

The final straw that breaks this movie’s proverbial back is the inclusion of Ramtha, the 35,000 year old Atlantian warrior spirit brought to us courtesy of a Tacoma housewife named JZ Knight (his “channel” in New Age circles). In a thick, Hollywood-esque Eastern European accent, Ramtha tells us about the wonders of Quantum Physics and how it is the first science to even come close to explaining magic and miracles. Okay… I don’t even know where to begin with this. First of all, if this is a movie about science, why are they including the claims of a New Age cult leader who can’t be verified one way or another. Also, what are this person’s credentials. If its just JZ Knight pretending to be some ancient Atlantian, does she have a Quantum Physics background? Second, if she IS some ancient Atlantian warrior, what are HIS Quantum Physics credentials (which could be easily verified with a series of Doctorate level tests)?

Of course, her/his authority is never questioned, and there’s a reason. It took a little digging to find, but the vast majority of the people involved in making this film are followers of Ramtha. When this came to light, I was flabbergasted. The fact that most of the movies views fall right in line with her group’s New Age philosophy puts an entirely new spin on the movie. Suddenly this looks like nothing but one, big recruitment piece for Ramtha.

I gave this movie one star because it does one good thing: It gets people thinking about Quantum Physics and reality. Some people who see this movie might be interested to dig deeper into the actual science and check out John Gribbin’s excellent series of books about Quantum Physics for the layman. I recommend “In Search of Schrondinger’s Cat” most highly.

As Richard Feynman said, “If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics”, and that sums up the major problem with this movie. It provides a view of quantum mechanics that is absurdly simple and abysmally unscientific. The beauty of particle physics is magical in and of itself, it doesn’t need to be married to philosophy and New Age metaphysics to be amazing.

I humbly submit that truly open-minded persons ought to make much use of that laudable trait in educating themselves about this movie: the topics it purports to deal with, the manner in which it attempts to portray them, & the possible motives & intentions of its makers. Also consider with an open mind the idea that until one has attained an understanding of the topics involved, the honest thing to do is to reserve one’s judgement, especially effusive unearned praise. And finally, try on for size the precept that it’s splendid to start out with an open mind but not quite so desireable to end up with one.

Below, for the open-minded, are some suggestions for further reading, grouped by topic. (If the filmmakers had really been very concerned about educating people about these issues, wouldn’t they have leapt to provide this information themselves?)

The who’s who of comedy fail dismally to deliver in this dvd. So they were still young and raw, but the bottom line is that I did not have more than 3 laughs throughout the movie. I have seen these guys bring on the laughs in later performances. They will themselves look back at this and consider it a learning curve on how not to do comedy.

Finally, an excellent job by Fox-Lorber (just about time, isn’t it?). The image in widescreen is sharp and the colors are right. A few forgivable scratches and artifacts here and there but excellent throughout. Can’t complain about the sound (mono) which is clear anyway and I think that’s how it was when it was first released in theatres. The different interactive menus have music from the film which is a delight thinking that Fox-Lorber did it. Chapter searches are few (6) and far in between but that’s okay (since Fox-Lorber is known for that). The only thing missing is the booklet which the company never does anyway (I wonder why). Anyway, the film is great and deserves the treatment it got for its transfer. Fascinating treatment by Wertmuller about a war-deserter who reflects on his life before he ended up in a German concentration camp. Very funny and poignant leading to a searing ending. Images show touches of Fellini whom Wertmuller studied under, yet this movie, which resonates greatness and already a classic is entirely her own. Unforgettable!

This film is so perfectly constructed and well acted that it should be required viewing in any film school. The use of flashback allows the action to switch from extremely funny scenes set in Naples to extremely grim depictions of life in a concentration camp. Giannini is absolutely brilliant as he struggles to maintain his exagerated sense of dignity under increasingly difficult circumstances. The concentration camp is potrayed as hell on earth- all darkness and forboding. Contrast this with colorful Naples and the liveliness of the residents. The film develops these contrasts in a way that focuses on the power of human endurance and the survival instinct. Giannini has an incredible ability to communicate the full range of human emotions with his eyes alone. A truly astounding and very funny performance. Possibly the best I’ve ever seen.

There are plenty of reviews here about the movie, so there is no sense in writing another.

This review is about the DVD. I will tell you up front that this DVD looks like a direct copy off VHS. I have seen the VHS version about 2 times this year and when the title song comes on, the audio fades in and out. Not bad, but you can definitely see some age in it. The DVD is EXACTLY the same. The sound is of no higher quality.

There is no widescreen, just a full screen with the same picture quality as VHS. It’s not horrible, but if you are the type of person who buys DVDs for the superior picture quality, you are definitely going to be unhappy with this.

The movie itself is EXCELLENT, I love it, but the DVD transfer from VHS isn’t the best.

As for bonus features, you get bios for all of the actors. The trouble is, the information included is the same as you can find on the internet movie database (imdb) as well as fan sites. If you have read a fair amount on any of the actors and know their biography fairly well, this DVD offers nothing new.

There are also some brief production notes about where and how this movie was done, and some quotes from the cast and crew.

Again, if you have done any research online and gone to any fan sites or even a site dedicated to John Hughes, you will find nothing new here. No interviews, a little behind the scenes, some background detail, but in the big picture, not much else.

Just a forewarning.

I bought the DVD because unlike VHS tapes, a DVD CD doesn’t wear out. But if you watch the VHS version, then the DVD, the quality is the same. DVD is not any better.

So overall, EXCELLENT movie, but not a great transfer. Still, if you are a fan, definitely add it to your collection, but if you buy DVDs for the extras, you will be very disappointed with this.

If you graduated from high school in the 1980s and haven’t seen this film, you must have been locked in a cave.

John Hughes delivers the definitive nostalgic teen movie of the Generation X crowd. The cast made up the ’80s “brat pack” with Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall. It’s hard to believe while seeing this film that Ringwald and Hall were the only real high school aged performers… the others were in their mid to late 20s during filming.

While modern teens may not find this as “sophisticated” as over-sexed comedies like “American Pie,” anyone can appreciate true feelings, teen angst, self doubt and relationships with parents portrayed in this film.

A group of kids sitting for 8 hours in detention on a Saturday none of them will ever forget. While there is foul language, it’s about the same speed as what you can hear on “NYPD Blue” on TV. There is no nudity or sex, just raw, in your face teen angst.

You see this group of “losers,” warts and all, and become friends with all of them before the film is over. The DVD doesn’t offer anything other than cast bios and subtitles… which is a disappointment. It would have been great to have had some interviews with the cast and behind the scenes footage. Nonetheless, DVD is much better than tape and definitely worth the extra $ for a non volitile format.

Some people call this a noir, and a good one. Some call it a psychological study of guilt. I think it’s a melodrama, but a well-crafted one. What moves it from noir to melodrama for me is that there are two weak motivating actions for the plot; the first (the death of the aunt) doesn’t have enough power to justify the drama, and the second (a conviction of an innocent man) is barely mentioned until the end of the movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Strange Love of Martha Ivers! Click Here

Sam Masterson (Van Heflin) is driving west when he decides to go through Iverstown. He has a car accident and has to stay in town until his car is fixed. He meets a young woman, Toni Marachek (Lizabeth Scott), just out of jail and on probation for a crime she wasn’t guilty of. Sam decides to go to the district attorney to see if he can help her. Years before as young kids, Sam and the DA, Walter O’Neil (Kirk Douglas), were sort-of friends, tied together by their friendship with Martha Ivers (Barbara Stanwyck).

Now O’Neil is married to Martha. He’s running for re-election. Martha inherited Ivers Industries and is the wealthiest woman in town. She’s a force to be reckoned with. She inherited millions when her aunt fell down a flight of stairs 18 years ago…the night she and Sam were planning to run off, when Walter was in the house with her and Sam. Her aunt (Judith Anderson), a rigid, disapproving, condescending woman, fell with the help of a crack on the head from a cane wielded by Martha. A few years later a man was hanged for the crime, prosecuted by Walter with testimony from Martha. They married and now live a loveless life, with Walter still the uncertain and sometimes scared child he used to be and Martha a controlling woman. Walter drinks heavily and Martha is contemptuous of him. Now Sam is back, innocently, but Walter in particular is convinced Sam is out to shake them down. “He’s a gambler, a sharp shooter, an angle boy,” he says to Martha. “They come through my office by the hundreds. Couldn’t you see blackmail in his eyes?”

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Strange Love of Martha Ivers! Click Here

Things quickly spiral down into a morass of misunderstandings, guilt, what might pass for love, and temptation. Walter loves Martha. Martha loves Sam. Sam loves Toni but is tempted by Martha. Toni loves Sam. All is resolved one night in the Ivers’ mansion with Martha, Walter and Sam playing out a potentially murderous triangle. But it’s 1946, and with the Production Code in place there’s little doubt which two people will die and which person will survive as a wiser man. When Martha urges Sam to kill Walter so that they can be together, Sam puts his finger on it. “Martha,’ he says, “you’re sick…in your mind, I mean, that’s where you’re sick…so sick you don’t even know the difference between right and wrong.”

The movie is beautifully photographed, for the most part the pacing is good, the establishment of the three leads’ personalities as children is excellently carried over into the performances and personalities of the three as adults. Unfortunately, the death of the aunt just doesn’t seem to be a strong enough element to justify all the angst. The aunt was in the process of beating Martha’s cat with her cane on the stairs when Martha grabbed the cane and struck her aunt. Any half-way competent lawyer would have been able to get a young heiress off without relying on Martha coming up with having seen a large burglar running from the house. This makes what follows, even with Martha’s intensity, seem out of proportion. Some of the dialogue, especially that given to Stanwyck and Douglas, is solid and uneasy…or maybe it’s their expert line delivery. But a good deal of the words Heflin and Scott have to say can sound artificial. “They said they wouldn’t hurt you,” Toni says to Sam when she tries to explain why she helped set him up for a beating. “No more parole, they said, if I went for it. I’d draw the whole five, they said, if I didn’t. I went for it. Go ahead and hit me, Sam. I’ve got it comin.’” Sam looks at her questioningly…then tenderly. “The one thing you’ve got comin’, kid, is a break.”

Even so, as melodrama it’s fun to watch. Barbara Stanwyck and Van Heflin do nice jobs, and Kirk Douglas makes a strong impression. He may be playing a weak drunk, but you look at him while he’s on screen.

The DVD picture is in great shape. If you buy this movie, be sure you get this Paramount version. There are a large number of other public domain versions out which look terrible. There are no extras.

In response to “Good movie yet awful copy” from “Noir”: Your experience is common: videos and DVD’s from Gotham, Dark City, and Alpha are very poor quality. I purchased the Image Entertainment DVD of Strange Love (ASIN: 6305944369) and can tell you it’s probably the best print of the film you’re going to find. Picture sharpness is good, sound is acceptable, and there are no missing frames to cause a “jumpy” picture. The brightness & contrast are normal for most of the film, except for a few early scenes where the picture looks washed out and grey. According to the research I’ve read, after this film dropped into the public domain, no one took the responsibility for preserving it, and as a result the best surviving print has suffered a lot of deterioration. However, I can easily recommend the Image Entertainment version of Strange Love Of Martha Ivers. Please note, that is NOT a blanket endorsement of all Image Entertainment DVD’s — for example, they did a TERRIBLE job on another Lizabeth Scott movie, Too Late For Tears — it looks as bad as anything from Alpha or Gotham, yet Image charges a premium price for it. Skip Too Late For Tears, but definitely buy the Image/Hal Roach DVD of Strange Love. And while you’re at it, why not write to Paramount Studios, 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, CA 90038, and ask them to give us a DVD of another Barbara Stanwyck film noir, The File On Thelma Jordan (Paramount owns the rights). Let’s all let the studios know we will support film noir and other classic films!

Lord Doom is tired of sitting in the middle of a cold, dead planet. He wants to live somewhere that is warm. So he instructs his dwarf henchman to send planet destroyer Kraa off to Earth to wipe out its civilization, thus making a takeover easier. The Planet Patrol gets wind of this horrid plan and attempts to stop Lord Doom. But Doom anticipated this and knocks their Death Star kinda thingie into self-destruct mode. The Patrol does manage to send an operative to Earth to stop Kraa though. His name is Mogyar and he kind of looks like a cheese covered crab, and he takes in an Italian accent!

Oh how I love this small, dumb movie. It rips off everything that was popular in 1998. Godzilla, The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Star Trek, Men In Black, and it even tosses in Masters of the Universe for good measure. I doubt that words can get across how gleefully stupid I think this thing is.

Kraa! The Sea Monster was one of two attempts at making old school style Kaiju funness by Charles Band’s once Paramount funded Full Moon Pictures. The other was Zarkorr! The Invader. By 1998 the deal with Paramount was finis and Band was on his own. Still with a little bit of cash (and a studio in Romania) he attempted to keep up the crank ‘em out fast ethic alive. Under the Full Moon umbrella such smaller ’speciality’ productions were founded. Pulsepounders (for tween entertainments), Surrender Cinema (for the *ahem* mature audiences), and Monster Island Entertainment (which distributed Zarkorr and Kraa) are the three I clearly remember, but I am sure there were one or two more. Sadly the whole operation crashed and burned within a year or two and, for awhile, Band floundered. Ever the astute survivalist though, Band has rebounded and Full Moon lives again! So Kraa! The Sea Monster now sees life on DVD. Sadly director Aaron Osbourne (or Dave Parker) contributes no commentary. Heck, I doubt there are even any chapter stops! There are some trailers, but parents be warned. Most of the trailers are for Full Moon’s skin exposing output, which makes this juvenile friendly movie a rather juvenile unfriendly disc release sadly enough.

Clearly Kraa is aimed at kiddie’s, what with its teen heroes dolled up as Star Trek convention attenders and acting like they are Power Ranger style defenders of the galaxy. Sadly they spend most of the movie trying to fix their busted Death Star station while the talking cheese covered crab attempts to convince the MiBs that he came in piece and can stop Kraa. There is a generous amount of building smashing and the monsters are goofy looking (look close when Kraa smashes through the power lines, you can see the man in the suit’s chin behind the teeth) yet still kind of cool looking (well Kraa is). The only down side is that the dwarf henchman isn’t played by Phil Fondacaro. Mr. Fondacaro is one cool dude. The dwarf in this movie, while I am sure he is a nice enough fellow, just doesn’t hold a candle to the coolness that is Phil Fondacaro. We need more movies with Phil Fondacaro.

I wish that Full Moon had done more Kaiju!

You want a good giant monster movie then rent something made by the Toho studios or featuring stop motion animation from Ray Harryhausen. If you want just dumb fun then you could do a whole lot worse than Kraa! The Sea Monster. A talking cheeseburger (believe me) tries to enlist the aid of some earthlings to battle a giant sea monster that threatens the world! Not great, but I found it a lot of fun on a Bert I Gordon level of filmmaking.

From the very beginning, Kung Fu Panda had me practically falling out of my seat — laughing. It was the perfect blend of comedy, heart, and action, all necessary elements in a successful and great animation/CGI film, in the tradition of The Incredibles and (less action, but containing the heart and laughter) Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.

I was laughing, smiling, and guffawing at Po, the main protagonist (voiced by Jack Black) and his misadventures at becoming a Kung Fu expert. This was certainly a flawed character, one that a lot of people can relate to because he dreams, he’s funny, and he can laugh at himself. Also, the story was pretty clear and easy to follow because the storytelling was well crafted, and the animation was paired well with characters brought vividly to life by some of the most famous names in Hollywood.

Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman are downright excellent as the main characters, and Ian McShane as the bad dude gave it the right fearful presence. Other big name stars don’t shine as much, but that’s because their roles are rather limited in the film. But that’s still okay because the animators should be given equal credit (if not more) for delivering the funny, action and heart elements of this movie in an effective, amazing and (I’ve got to use this) AWESOME manner. Visually, this movie is stunning (notice all those scenic shots of the Chinese mountains, bodies of water, and the bridge scene; not to mention the action animation version of “The Matrix” with slow-mo)… simply a delight to watch.

It’s clear that Dreamworks has gotten back in the animation game with Kung Fu Panda, after slight ho-hums in Shrek 3 and Bee Movie (call me crazy, but I liked Over The Hedge more than those two). Hopefully, it should earn well over $500M worldwide because it is so good.

This movie rightfully belongs in the top animation movies of all time (okay, let’s not include the classic fairy tales of old; let’s begin with the 90’s onwards), alongside my faves “The Incredibles” “Finding Nemo” and “Beauty & The Beast.” Has the makings of being a classic.

Enjoy!

With deep foreboding, I walked into this movie braced for second rate animation (at least compared to Pixar), endless fights between cartoons (as in the CGI “Clone Wars”), and a cultural sensitivity that was either painfully preachy (like “Mulan”) or outright insulting (like “Aladdin”).

At first, my dread seemed confirmed. Poor Dustin Hoffman mangles Chinese names without mercy – so much so that James Hong, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan have to deliberately mispronounce stuff just to match what he says.

But once the movie got rolling, I found myself grinning from ear to ear in sheer delight. Yes, it’s true, Dreamworks can’t compete with Pixar’s technology, but they make up for it with beautiful graphic design, sheer wit and – of course – those hilariously quivering “Scrat Eyes”. What’s more, the animators somehow manage to make Kung Fu battles between cartoons both exciting and enjoyable – every bit the match of live action fights (which nowadays are nothing more than CGI with faces pasted on).

However, the most remarkable thing about this film is how faithful it is to Chinese culture – family dynamics, Buddhist philosophy, values, and even martial arts – this film simply HAS to have been written by Chinese. There is never a moment where it strains to “score points” with political correctness. Its characters are never tediously noble “anti-stereotypes”, but are instead lovingly depicted with all their flaws intact while uniquely Chinese messages are delicately hidden within a plot crammed with excitement and laughter. Here you experience how parental love turns into suffocating pressure, here you see teenage rebellion as a monstrosity rather than a virtue, here you see the quirky characters of a city (complete with that wobbly “bound foot” walk), here you hear the wisdom of Zen detachment, and here you experience the sacred relationship between student and teacher.

Perhaps my opinion is biased by the surprise this movie gave to my low expectations, but I can’t help but see this film as an unappreciated but precious gem. Now if only someone could do the same thing with Islamic culture…!

In response to earlier post saying that there was no season 5:

NONE of the episodes on the Season 5 set are on the Season 1&2 or Season 3&4 DVD sets. I now own seasons 1-5 on DVD, and I can attest that these episodes are NOT duplicates of other sets.

While most SBTB websites only have 4 seasons in their episode lists, it seems that there is inconsistency as to how the episodes are listed, and how they are divided into seasons.

These episodes (below) are on the Season 5 DVD set. They are NOT on the Seasons 1-4 DVD sets. (I got the episode numbers from a SBTB website episode list.)

62: The Fight, 63: Student-Teacher Week, 64: Screech’s Spaghetti Sauce, 65: The New Girl, 66: The Bayside Triangle, 67: Teen-Line, 68: Masquerade Ball, 69: Day of Detention, 70: Wrestling with the Future, 71: Drinking and Driving, 72: Love Machine, 73: Class Rings, 74: Isn’t it Romantic?, 75: The Will, 76: The Teacher’s Strike, 77: Slater’s Sister, 78: The Senior Prom, 79: The Video Yearbook, 81: Snow White and the Seven Dorks, 82: Earthquake, 83: Best Summer of My Life, 85: School Song, 86: The Time Capsule, 87: Graduation

Two episodes missing from this list (80: Screech’s Birthday, and 84: Slater’s Friend) were on disc 3 of the Season ONE DVDs.

So, this Season 5 set does NOT contain the same episodes as in other sets. Any true fan of the show can look over those episode titles, and will remember at least some of them (like “Teen Line”) and recognize that they are NOT in the sets for Seasons 1 through 4.

While Cody gets an A+ for effort, the episode that he refers to in his review is not a senior class trip, but simply a “class trip.” It is the first episode on the first disc from Season 3.

Overall, I was extremely pleased with the display of the DVD case as well as the organization of episodes. There’s actually a featurette included on the dvd’s discussing how this crazy teen’s tv show came onto the screen and why it was so successful.

Also, this 3 disc set features the very last “original” saved by the bell episodes, including graduation. It was sad to see the show go, but at least I have this awesome season 5 dvd set that I can watch over and over whenever I want. I will, without a doubt, recommend this to another.
