Two German filmmakers went to Mongolia’s Gobi desert to make a documentary. Here, they got to know one particular family and witnessed a real story that was unfolding in front of their eyes. They filmed it all. And this film is the result.

The family is real. The little girl cries for her mother but quiets when her grandmother gives her a sweet. The two boys act like children everywhere, wide eyed with wonder and wanting to help out their family. The parents are loving. The grandparents are wise. They raise camels and sheep for a living and have been doing so for hundreds of years. There is plenty of food and they seem to have all the things they need even though they live without electricity and just a battery-operated radio to connect them to the outside world. Of course the modern world is influencing them. The little girl wears a sweatshirt with silk-screening on it. The little boy keeps asking for a television set.

The central story, however, is about a camel. Yes, a camel. It’s the birthing season and we watch a camel giving birth and then bonding with her young. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. Another mama camel, however, has a difficult birth. The little one is coming feet first and the mama camel is in a lot of distress. The family watches this all and tries to help, but basically, the mama camel does it all on her own. Then, instead of the instant bonding that we’ve already seen among other camels, this mama camel rejects her little one. The family tries everything to try to make her feed her baby, but she just pushes the little camel away. Days go by and even though the family tries to feed the baby camel, they know that the little one will die if he doesn’t get his mother’s milk in quantity.

The two young boys, who are probably about 7 and 13 are sent on a journey to bring back a musician who will play sacred music. The family believes that this might make the mother camel receptive to the baby camel. It’s quite a long trip and looked dangerous even though I knew that there was a film crew along filming the whole thing. The settlement is Russian and there is a school and some stores and a market. Most of all though, there is television. The boys are fascinated.

Soon they return. And the musician comes too. And of course there is a happy ending.

Along the way, though, I felt I was picked up and gently placed down in a culture on the other side of the world. I absorbed the details of their lives. Stressed with them over their problem with the camel. And really cared for them all, including the camel.

I highly recommend this film for everyone. It’s a truly engrossing and heartwarming story as well as being a valuable lesson in geography and cultural anthropology. Don’t miss it!

A visual impression of the environment in the southern Mongolian Gobi desert would be a sandy foreground with tall mountains in the far horizon topped with an endless blue sky. Storms appear with short notice and without consideration of the people inhabiting the desert. Populations in this remote location, where modern technology and monetary system do not apply, must find alternative means for continued existence. Sheep farming and camel breeding are the main means of trade as the earth is too exhausted to farm. The comfort of continual running water or electricity available from the flip of a switch is something of a fantasy. Despite these hardships, the people of the Gobi desert remain in this harsh environment living by their ancient traditions, which the elderly pass down to younger generations.

The Italian, Luigi Falorni, and Mongolian, Byambasuren Davaa, filmmaker with German film background ventured to the unsympathetic land of the Gobi desert where they intended to capture the truth of the people living in this sandy place. The two filmmakers began their shooting in the spring, after the severe winter, as they decided on capturing the life of a family consisting of four different generations living together in a couple of tent-like structures. Daily chores around their home are being immortalized by the camera, which depicts a life style with very little external stimuli. All members of the family tend to the sheep and camels, as children are taught from an early age to help with the chores. Several situations display the family members’ awareness of nature’s phenomenon, as they have to handle camel births and prepare for stormy weather.

Unintentionally, Falorni and Davaa stumble upon a spectacular story, which they were fortunate to transmit to the world through their documentary. The story within the documentary begins at the end of a camel birthing season when one of the camels, Ingen Temee, rejects its white offspring, Botok, after a two day long labor. Images of other camels embracing their young colts pass on the affectionate nature of the camels, which increases the emotional pain depicted as Ingen Temee rejects Botok. The little white colt is in constant hunger as the mother refuses to let him feed, which will cause much sadness among the viewers. However, to the people of Gobi desert the camel has more than affectionate value. The value of the camel is illustrated the use of the camel, as the camel provides transportation, milk, rope, and even toys for children. In essence, the camel is a means of survival. In order to prevent the young colt from dying the family decides to send Dude, a young teen, and his much younger brother, Ugna, on a 50 kilometer journey on camel to return with a violinist in order to hold a old traditional ceremony.

The journey for the violinist turns out to be an eye-boggling adventure for Ugna, as he discovers the wonders of television. Ugna cannot take his eyes off this square piece of technology that he discovered at some close neighbors home, a days camel ride away. When the two brothers continue to their destination Ugna asks Dude what a television would cost. Dude responds, “about 50 sheep, but then you would also need electricity.” This displays the authenticity of the story and the value system by which they live.

Eventually the two boys return from their long journey, which leads the viewers to one of the most amazing events in history where the power of music will carry over to another species. This leaves the viewer wondering over the scientific approach to the world. However, it also brings a warm and poignant feeling that remains within the audience long after the film is over.

The Story of the Weeping Camel is in some aspects a dreary cinematic experience, but it has to be slow and monotonous compared to western living. As mentioned before, very little external stimuli is provided to the people in the film. The only means of communication with the outside world is a battery-operated radio, which does not work through most of the film, as they do not have batteries. In the stillness and the seemingly endless desert the audience will experience a truly genuine culture. This culture sheds some light on our high-technological society, as it probably will make most of the viewers feel a little embarrassed about our daily complaints when the cable does not work, or if electricity is accidentally shut off.

Reform School girls is an over the top woman in prison cult classic that is FUN FUN FUN to watch. I watched this movie 100’s of times growing up in the mid 80’s, and it still pleases today. Wendy O Williams is completely mesmerizing to watch, although her acting is pretty bad to say the least. Still the film manages to entertain with its completely unbelievable premise. I love this movie. Pat Ast and Wendy O Williams make this movie what it is, and why Sybil Danning got the DVD cover I’ll never know (she’s barely in the film).

Pat and Wendy (both who have since passed) make great villains though, and are thoroughly enjoyable to watch over and over again. If you like low budget, entertaining prison films with lots of women, violence & nudity, then you will love Reform School Girls. The soundtrack is pretty awesome too, and showcases W.O.W’s real talent as a musician and performer.

CHECK OUT THE DVD COMMENTARY! IT’S PRETTY FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING TO LISTEN TO!

Ok, this movie has no real plot or point to it, but for T & A and some classic Pat Ast moments, this is the movie to see. This movie is one of my Top 10 flicks of all time. It has a kickin’ soundtrack as well as my three favorite things from the MPAA ratings: Sexuality, graphic language and violence. Basically a good girl gone bad, thrown into a reform school and her misdaventures there with the bullying gang of female thugs ran by the late Wendy O. Williams. Throw in the mean person in charge (Pat Ast) and Sybil Danning as the warden and you are in for around 90 minute’s of fun.

This DVD represents everything the format can offer in a music video. It has all of Al’s videos, with stereo surround and 5.1 tracks, plus some extra clips from Al’s Saturday morning cartoon show and his 1981 TV debut on Tom Snyder’s Tomorrow Show. The videos are presented in random order; you can really see that Al’s 80’s videos hold up quite well in comparison to his 90’s videos. Here’s the track listing:

1. Fat
2. Amish Paradise
3. It’s All About the Pentiums
4. Smells Like Nirvana

5. You Don’t Love Me Anymore
6. Bedrock Anthem
7. Gump
8. Jurassic Park
9. Headline News
10. Dare to Be Stupid *my favorite*
11. Eat It
12. Like a Surgeon
13. UHF
14. Money For Nothing / Beverly Hillbillies
15. One More Minute
16. I Lost On Jeopardy
17. This Is the Life
18. Living With a Hernia
19. Spy Hard
20. Ricky
21. Christmas at Ground Zero
22. I Love Rocky Road
23. Bob
24. The Saga Begins

As you can see, no Weird Al fan should be without this DVD. I’d rate it 6 stars if I could.

This DVD is awesome! It includes all 24 of Al’s music videos, and they all look and sound great. The DVD is slightly different from “Weird Al Yankovic: The Videos” because the videos on this collection are not in order. They mix them up, and it makes it even more fun to watch them. The DVD also has some great special features. These include a rare 1981 performance from the old NBC Tomorrow Show. It’s a performance of “Another One Rides the Bus”, and Al didn’t even have a band yet. It was just John “Bermuda” Schwartz banging on Al’s accordian case. It’s really cool to see such an old performance! The DVD also includes a couple of clips from the old “Weird Al Show”. These are “Lousy Haircut” which was also played on Al’s recent concert tour, “Lasagna”, and “Livin’ in the Fridge”. It also includes a photo gallery and onscreen lyrics. Overall, this DVD is jam packed with entertainment!

I noticed recently that this title has gone out of print (as of 10/12/06), so I felt compelled to say a few words about what I feel is a very special film. I want to encourage anyone who has not seen it to grab a copy NOW while you still can, and I hope that a great designer label (perhaps Criterion) will pick it up and showcase it to a greater audience.

“The Mother” is a very adult tale and that’s part of what makes it so special. Aside from the somewhat graphic, intergenerational sex scenes which are noteworthy enough–”The Mother” offers up one of the most complex and uncompromising character studies ever put on film. Anne Reid is flawless as the mother in question. Widowed, sixty-something and completely dissatisfied with life in general, she enters into an illicit affair with the friend of her son. She feels her life is empty, useless–and the affair is her one way to feel again, feel anything. Is it passion, love, degradation? In truth, it’s a combination of all three and her only tangible way to grasp at the life she has become so disconnected with. The film never asks you to sympathize with her, it’s a “warts and all” approach. Far from being a heroine, you will be left questioning her motivations, her incapacity to love, her familial loyalty. It’s a brave, bold, and stunning portrait.

Every time you think you know where the story is headed, your expectations are thwarted. Like real life, things don’t necessarily follow an inevitable logic nor do they resolve themselves tidily. Daniel Craig does solid work, as usual. But it’s Reid’s show. In a fierce performance, she lays body and soul naked–a performance that surely would have garnered an Oscar nomination if the film had a higher U.S. profile.

For those that lament the lack of ADULT, challenging films–this is a must see! I found myself rooting for these characters even though much of their behavior is destructive. I just find it refreshing when things don’t have to be nice or happy or polite. That may be what is represented in most movies, but life is more complex than that! KGHarris, 10/06.

One of the first things that struck me about “the Mother” was how disaffected, distant, and unemotional she is. In fact, her entire family seems to be so totally self-absorbed, self-obsessed and overly materialistic that not one character is at all likable. Rather than appearing as a shining beacon of love and support to her children, May (a marvelous Anne Reid), comes across as more concerned about her own failings. While ready to listen on the surface, deep down she’s a middle-class, snobby, and somewhat uncaring mother who probably loves her children when it’s convenient for her, but has spent the majority of her life resenting her children for stifling her when she was younger. The sexy affair she embarks on with her daughter’s boyfriend, without regard for her daughter’s feelings, says a lot about the years of pent-up repression inside of her.

Astutely observing the intricacies and nuances of English domestic middle-class life, director Roger Michell, allows us to peek into the lives of the elderly May and Toots (Peter Vaughan) as they visit their grown children in London. They are a long-married and well-to-do couple. Bobby (Steven Mackintosh), their busy son has a glamorous life style, a thriving business, a new house, and a wife and two children. Paula (Cathryn Bradshaw), their daughter, is a single mother, a schoolteacher, and an unpublished writer. When Toots suddenly dies of a heart attack, May, in a fit of fear and loneliness, moves in with her children to escape the solitude of her house. Her arrival at Bobby’s causes problems so May goes to stay with the busy Paula.

Going back and forth from Paula’s flat to Bobby’s house, May meets Darren (a gorgeously sexy Daniel Craig), Bobby’s robust, muscle-laden best friend who is doing some building work on the house. After Paula asks her mother to find out whether Darren wants to marry her, May becomes friendly with Darren. They have lunch together and there’s obviously a connection because May kisses Darren. Soon their friendship becomes physical and with Darren sexually thrilling her, they begin an incredibly hot affair. May is a frumpy grandmother in her sixties, while Darren is a bearded, virile man in his thirties.

All the characters in this film are absolutely mired in dysfunction. May is unhappy and alone, and she fears becoming old. Her children don’t particularly like her, and Paula, especially, bitterly resents her; she thinks that May’s been a lousy mother who never “encouraged” her. Paula is portrayed as neurotic, hysterical and cloying, and her obsession with Darren totally gets in the way of her ability to see that Darren is kind of useless and doesn’t particularly love her. Darren is also haunted: he drinks too much, copes with an autistic son, and sleeps in his car. He’s always poor and seeks solace from his problems in doing lines of coke. At first Darren is nice to May, and she offers to take him on as a type of sugar mother to him, but soon she begins to see his other side.

The Mother is a beautifully acted movie with Daniel Craig and Anne Reid giving astoundingly realistic performances. The sex scenes between them both are totally realistic and beautifully done, the connection between them being far more than just sex. Reid is especially good at portraying a complicated, middle-aged woman, who is actively seeking her own fulfillment and rediscovering parts of herself that have lain dormant for years. Craig is also great as her young, spunky suitor easily portraying a good man who seems to be very kind and understanding until May, unrealistically tries to push their relationship. The Mother is a quiet, complex and very adult film that analyses, with a type of subtle restraint, the deleterious effects of selfishness, egocentricity, and self-interest on families. Mike Leonard December 04.

LEGACY is an absorbing profile of Renzo Gracie, one of the latest carriers of the Gracie jiu-jitsu flame. It covers ten years of his active fighting career, with some back-story relating to his early years and family ties.

Unlike many puff profiles, “Legacy” does not just selectively show the fights that the protagonist wins. In fact, I think most of the fights shown were ones where Renzo lost. Even if defeat, Renzo is gracious and tenacious. He reacted to defeat by picking himself up and getting back into the gym.

The most telling vignette is one where Renzo recalls being at a fighting event, sitting with a group of other fighters awaiting their bouts. Reach of the other fighters comments on what they had rather be doing. Gracie exploded, “What the #$%^ is wrong with you?! There’s no place on earth I’d rather be!!”

For fans of MMA, jiu-jitsu or the Gracies, LEGACY will be a genuine treat!

RENZO GRACIE

LEGACY

Probably the greatest documentary on a Mixed Martial Artist and it just so happens it is on one of the all time greats, Renzo Gracie. The Gracie’s are the first family of MMA and are even literally the creators of The UFC; Renzo is one of the best fighters from that legendary family. For those who know that is really saying something because this family is beyond legendary. This documentary is an inside look into 10 plus years of Renzo’s life from his first fight to his latest against Frank Shamrock.

I love the way that this doc starts with Renzo telling a story about a time in Pride FC were the other fighters were talking about they would rather be home, his response to them is hilarious and just shows the type of man that he is. From the start Renzo tells of how BJJ was started and how his father was a prisoner in a corrupt land and was tortured along side his people. His telling of how his father said that no matter what was done to them there were some people in there who never broke, and never said a word, I like Renzo would be proud of that heritage as well. His family’s history is covered rather well in this and gives an insight into how it all began from humble beginnings to a legendary family.

His career is of course a driving force behind this but more time is spent on his losses in this documentary, more so than his wins because you learn from them. His brutal knock out of Oleg Taktarov though is what starts things out on this doc. But until last night’s wonderfully beautiful KO of Michael Bisping at the hands of legend Dan Henderson I would say this is the most brutal knock out ever, it still may even beat Henderson’s. From here we are treated to rare glimpses of Renzo’s early days including a fight that literally started the entire crowd to riot, I love those crazy Gracie’s

From his many wins to his fewer losses we are treated to his life in and out of the fight game, and like every other Gracie Renzo was born into Jiu-jitsu. Of course his time in Pride FC is covered including his classic bout with Sakaraba, as well as every other. Still even more interesting is his fight with perhaps the greatest fighter ever BJ Penn who was trained by the Gracie’s, Ralph to be exact. This fight gets a good amount of time spent on it mainly because of the feud between the two camps, their history and of course because the fight was excellent. Also included is the world famous Abu Dhabi and footage of not only Renzo competing in it but other Gracie’s as well as people like Eddie Bravo.

Still the fighting and such is only part of this man’s journey as we get to see the family man that he is and the leader that he is. I know it especially hard on him when his brother Ryan was found dead in a jail cell in Brazil, R.I.P. Of course his time spent in the I.F.L. is documented since he was a coach [his team even won the championship one year]. But it is his now famous fight with another legend in the game, Pat Miletich, which is probably my favorite submission of all time. This fight was not only broadcast on the actual event but also on the show 60 Minutes [I believe it was] which helped it become the most watched MMA bout ever.

Renzo went on to avenge a prior loss to Carlos Newton and also went on to defeat one of the greatest fighters to ever live, Frank Shamrock. Renzo is a man of principle, integrity, honor, and respect and is also one of the greatest fighters ever. This documentary covers all the highs and all the lows with no biased over 10 years of a wonderful career. It is rare to see such a personal and honest look inside the life of a martial artist. The special features are basically long enough to be another entire documentary on Renzo. I especially love the one featuring Renzo’s first American black belt Matt Serra as Serra is actually coaching Renzo before his fight with Penn. That is what I love about Renzo he is the teacher and person who trained Serra but he is not above him and arrogant in any way and allows Serra to help train him. You know you are good if in a room full of Brazilians [Gracies] you are the only American and are also respected enough by them that they will actually take tips from you.

Buy this now and witness with your own eyes what a great documentary is all about, Renzo’s Legacy is forever burned into my head. What a great man, fighter, and documentary, buy this now.

I was extremely excited when I saw this had come out on DVD. I’ve been a Pound Puppies fan since I was little, and to have at least of piece of that on DVD is very cool. The story’s fun, and as a kid (and even now) the characters are lively and enjoyable.

There wasn’t anything amazing about the DVD, but one of the features I liked (that isn’t present on all DVDs) was the direct play. No pesky button pushing. They haven’t done anything fancy with the animation but, being as it was released in 1988, the quality isn’t bad anyway. It’s as I remember it, and it’s fun to hear the voices again and reconnect with the characters.

A great movie for fans, young and old, as well as those who haven’t seen it yet!

The youngest pound puppy, Whopper, has grown up and turns out to be just like Cooler. He’s telling two little puppies about the Bone of Scone, this giant, magic bone that allows humans to communicate with dogs. Back when Cooler was still in charge, this ugly guy whose last name was McNasty planned on stealing it. He adopted a pack of baby pitbulls, and used this machine to make them big and evil. Well, Whopper and his sister Bright Eyes ound out and told Cooler, and he and the rest of the pound puppies went off in search of Big Paw, who sings this cute song about how he loves you, and he’s just a lonely little puppy too, even though he’s about 15 feet tall. Then, this one dog, Coolette, has been kidnapped, and Whopper and Bright Eyes have to watch her newborn puppies. So when all the dogs except Cooler, Sammy, Hair Ball, (Pound Purries) and the puppies have been turned evil, Coolette’s about to attack the babies when they say, “Mommy, we love you.” Coolette turns back to normal, and Cooler figures it out. Reflex, this one dog who’s trained to say “I love you” whenever he hears a bell, is cured of the evil by Cooler, who has him ring the bell and Reflex cures everyone. Then, at the end, there’s a Sock Hop at the pound. At the very end, with grown up Whopper, the two puppies don’t believe him because he used to tell stories, hence his name. Then a HUGE black dog comes out, and the two puppies whisper, “Big Paw.”

Any film that can gather the family together for a fun, wholesome, and entertaining view, and hold the interest of all for it’s entire length, gets 5 stars in my book. “Casper” is one of those films. It may not go down as some great piece of cinematic art, but it is one that all generations can enjoy, will leave you with a smile, and something to talk about with kids afterwards.

Based on the old comic book stories, “Casper” is a very friendly but very lonely ghost. He lives in an old mansion, that has seen better days. He is not alone in this huge house though, he lives with his three very nasty(but funny) uncles,”Stretch”, “Stinky” and “Fatso”. Casper only wants someone to move in,so he could have a friend, the uncles on the other hand, do their very best to scare away any visitors.

So when a greedy woman inherits the property, and believes there is a buried treasure inside, she hires an array of ‘ghostbusters’ to rid the house of all spirits. None seem to be able to handle this terrible trio, until one day a ghost psychiatrist and his lonely daughter(also looking for a friend),move in and try to tame the threesome. From there it’s a fun and wild ride, and a touching story of friendship.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casper! Click Here

The film has a terrific cast that works well with the wonderful animation and special effects. Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci are the father and daughter team that befriend these spirits. Cathy Moriarty(”Forget Paris”), and Eric Idle as her bumbling assistant add their talents as they go for the treasure.Lots of big names are cameoed throughout. Don Novello, and Dan Aykroyd reprise their roles of Father Guido Sarducci, and ghostbuster Dr. Raymond Stantz for brief appearances, just to name a couple.

The voices including Brad Garrett as “Fatso” are marvelous, and you can never go wrong when James Horner scores a film with just the right touches.

It’s rated PG for some occassional mild language and thematic elements, and at an hour and a half, it just the right length, and is a delightful way to spend some laugh out loud family time together.

Ghostly fun……enjoy…..Laurie

Who says there are no such things as ghosts? Not if there is the ghostly inhabitants of Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine!
This desolate mansion is then, in the words of one of the members of the Ghostly Trio of Whipstaff, ‘intruded’ by Kat Harvey (Christina Ricci) and her eccentric father Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman), a ghost therapist. Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) had hired Dr. Harvey to exorcise the ghosts, including Casper the friendly ghost and his three obnoxious uncles, Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie, aspiring to gain Whipstaff’s ‘buried gold’.
Intertwining humour, all-time ‘floating’ fun and a modern Cinderella story, ‘Casper’ promises to please as a movie which is compelling, hilarious, captivating, heart-warming, witty and above all, truly ‘fleshtastic’.
‘Casper’ is recommended for any audience, regardless of age. … ‘Casper’ … manages to appear endearing and ultimately special.
The magic of Bill Pullman, Christina Ricci as well as that of director Brad Silberling, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and other producers weaves between each and every scene to eventually lift us off our feet.
Above all, I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Casper is my all time favourite character. Truly fleshtastic. BOOlistic! You won’t BOOlieve it until you see it.

Warner Bros. Premiere have been putting out DC Universe animated features revolving around the Detective Comics characters. First came Superman: Doomsday based on the record selling comic book story in which Superman is actually killed, second came Justice League: The New Frontier based on award winning graphic novel’s about the earliest beginnings of the Justice League, then Batman: Gotham Knight was animated with strong anime influence and told several stories set between the two latest live action films (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight). Now we can finally experience the animated DC Universe depiction of Wonder Woman’s origin.

The plot is about the amazon princess Diana, on the secluded Island Themyscira, first meeting Steve Trevor, a pilot who crash lands on the island of no men. After fighting in a tournament against fellow competing amazons for the right to escort Trevor back to ‘man’s world’ Diana dons the Wonder Woman outfit for her first time and heads on her first outing. As she tries to understand the world of man Diana must deal with the threat of God Of War Ares, who has escaped from a centuries long imprisonment and is looking to start trouble.

Voice casting includes Keri Russell (Famous for Felicity, and more recently Waitress, August Rush and Bedtime Stories) as the young Wonder Woman. Nathan Fillion (co-starred with Russell in Waitress) as Steve Trevor. Alfred Molina (Doc Oc in Spider-man 2) as God Of War Ares, Virigina Madsen (Co-star of Jim Carrey in Number 23) as Diana’s mother Queen Hippolyta and Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds with Will Smith) as Dianna’s rival amazon Artemis.

There are three versions released. The Blu-Ray, the Two-Disc Special Edition DVD (with Digital Copy) and the Single Edition DVD. Features included with the Two-Disc DVD and Blu-Ray will be:

Disc 1- Commentary by the creative team, also as is customary with these releases a first look at DC/Warner’s next animated feature project ‘Green Lantern’.

Disc 2- 2 Documentaries- Wonder Woman: A Subversive Dream, and Wonder Woman Daughter of Myth: Historical Amazon Lore and it’s Evolution into the Modern Day Wonder Woman Character. Also as usual with these releases two episodes selected from the Justice League series are included as Bruce Timm’s favorite picks: To Another Shore and Hawk And Dove.

The feature itself has a running time of 74 min. and is presented like the other features in widescreen format. These features are PG-13 and this one works hard to earn that rating. There are nods to adult situations (often occuring in brief passing or to provide humor) as well as alot of action scenes and killing but only a few specific uses of blood. This is not something recommended for children but is perfect for preteens and teenagers. Still parent’s are capable of using their own discretion.

About the quality you can expect if you haven’t seen the other recent features, DC/Warner have been delivering top notch animation on these features rivaling that of Disney’s straight to DVD releases and I think this one has the best animation yet. The stories are always well written and stay true to source materials that the characters are taken from. Another thing these new features have done well is providing alot of well staged action scenes and still delivering fine moments of character development/exploration that I haven’t seen since Batman The Animated Series.

This is the first solo animated feature for Wonder Woman and I feel it portrays her with the dignity DC’s third biggest icon deserves and the same respect she was granted in the Justice League series, which to me is the most believably she has been depicted thus far (if only because of her lack of exposure in this medium to date). I hope there will be some sort of sequels developed for this film as it was such a good starting point for the character that it seems a shame to leave off here when she has really only just begun her role as Wonder Woman as the feature reaches it’s end.

Overall the animation was spectacular, the best Warner Premiere has done yet. The story while suffering some pacing issues (to be expected in a 74 min. feature trying to tell such an epic story), was true to the character and is overall well done and enjoyable. The score was worthy of a summer blockbuster and perfectly matched the epic tone. The voice actor’s were for the most part spot on and made me believe the character’s and think of them as seperate entities from the actor’s voicing them. There is even a fair amount of humor and a bit of a love story mixed into the plot that only adds to the viewer’s enjoyment. As well the DVD has a fair amount of special features that I found enjoyable to watch. I definitely give it 5 stars on blue spandex, especially for anyone who is a fan of well depicted heroines or Wonder Woman herself. Thanks For Your Time.

Created in 1941 by American scientist William Marston (with assists from his wife Elizabeth and their polyamourous lover Olive Byrne), Diana of Themyscira, Wonder Woman, has become one of the most famous heroes in comics. She is usually counted among the “Big Three” of DC, her owners, alongside Superman and Batman. This is, however, illusory in many respects; the character has never received even a fraction of the popular or creator attention of her alleged compeers (having, for example, to settle for a supporting role in Bruce Timm’s own DC Animated Universe when the others got series of their own). This is the first new solo Wonder Woman project in any medium apart from comics in more than thirty years.

As mentioned, Timm and co. have worked with the character before, on “Justice League Unlimited”, an exercise which was frankly a disastrous adaptation of the character. Stripped of her personality and most of the important parts of her origin, with her villains and supporting cast either not there at all or bland ciphers, very little of what made the character great came through there. I was apprehensive approaching this DVD, because, while a huge fan of Timm’s animation, his track record with Wonder Woman is not good. It was also hardly encouraging for writer Michael Jelenic to admit to not having known anything about the character before he was assigned to the film. I should say, some spoilers are to be found.

The basic plot, as has been outlined in the other reviews here, is in common with Diana’s previous comics origin stories: Ares, God of War (Mars, in Marston’s original version) is loose and out to destroy the world, and it is up to the champion of his rivals in the Greek Pantheon to stop him. The Amazons, mythical race of warrior women, hold a contest to determine who will face the threat, and Diana, defying her mother’s wishes, enters and wins. Whether or not she is accompanied by Steve Trevor as a love interest varies; here, she is. Nothing revolutionary here, but there’s no reason to radically change a solid and important story (which Timm and co. did in JLU).

The animation is beautiful; by far the best stuff in any of the DC DVDs they’ve done so far. The Wonder Woman design is appreciably Greek, athletic and powerful while still very beautiful (though DC’s own artists have a hard time rendering this version of the design consistently on the posters and other promotional material; compare the covers of the single- and two-disk versions of this DVD) and many other characters, such as Artemis, are rendered more or less perfectly. The film can also be pretty funny, and it’s pretty bloody, too; the battle scenes are close to flawless. This is easily the finest action yet depicted onscreen in DC’s animated efforts, which is quite a high bar to clear. Bettering JLU, there’s a more serious take on the character’s mythology here, both in terms of the actual Greek mythology and Themysciran society, which in this case is inhabited by some actual characters with more than one dimension, rather than a bunch of drones lorded over by Diana’s undeveloped mother.

And now we arrive at the parts of the story where the writers are asked to really interpret the character, and, once again, they trip (though on the whole I’d say not as badly). Sigh. I know (moreso than most, even) that Wonder Woman as a character has had a lot of different takes over her 70-year history, but in the broad scheme of things, there are in fact thematic elements that have been consistent from Marston onward. One of these, and really chief to the whole character, is that the Amazons are a superior and enlightened society who prize culture and the arts as high as martial prowess, love peace, and are meant to bring it to the wider world and save it. Get that through your skulls, Timm and co: superior society. Not “bloodthirsty Xena clones” and “strawman feminist”. Because that’s more or less what they are here, just like in JL/U. They’re aggressively misandrist, to a point that they’e never been in the comics outside of abortions like Amazons Attack. If anything, they learn a valuable lesson on tolerance from Steve Trevor. They’ve got no philosophy or higher ideas here.

Speaking of Steve Trevor, he’s back in his Silver Age form, ie, sexist cad. Why do writers keep thinking a feminist hero should fall in love with a cad who is constantly making jokey, piggish advances? I mean, if you want him as a love interest instead of the Perez version, at least go with Perez’s take on his personality: Post-Crisis Steve was a competent, gentlemanly fellow.

On the subject of Diana’s power levels; getting the thing that most people will talk about out of the way, she can’t fly, which is lame (because creators are all obsessed with that stupid jet), but not insurmountable; the bigger issue is that her power levels are wildly inconsistent. When she first meets Steve, they get into a fist fight, at which he, in another unbelievable moment, actually holds his own for a bit, both in terms of martial arts proficiency and knocking her around. In other scenes (such as the clip they’ve shown online of her fighting Deimos), she’s a mid-tier bruiser, throwing guys through walls and punching them across the room. Jelenic seems desperate to avoid any suggestion that Steve isn’t Diana’s equal in order to not offend male audience members, which is a terrible way to approach this sort of thing; Steve is not Diana’s equal in combat in the slightest, nor should he have to be.

Setting aside these things (which, apart from power levels, are subjective, I suppose), parts of the plot/character-interaction are just baffling. Consider, after winning the Contest while in disguise to avoid her mother’s ban on entering, Diana unmasks before the crowd and her mother, the Queen, who…has no reaction to this, whatsoever. That’s a pivotal moment in the story, but Hippolyta just blankly offers congratulations. This has always been a key moment in the characters’ relationship, but instead, there’s nothing.

Timm’s best work (ie, most of it) shows audiences the core of his heroes, what makes them unique and awesome as characters. Jelenic, the writer, mentioned something along these lines in his interviews: when talking about Hippolyta, he described her as “almost Wonder Woman, but she isn’t, which leads you to the question of why isn’t she Wonder Woman? What is is about her and Diana that makes Diana Wonder Woman?”

Jelenic never answers his own question. The war with Ares ultimately requires of Diana nothing that her mother couldn’t have done, or Artemis (and not just because the Amazons all have the same powers here); absolutely anybody can use the Lasso of Truth here (indeed, it’s Hippolyta’s), and the defeat of Ares comes when Diana kills him with her sword.

Ooooh, nobody else could have done that. Except they can, and they do.

The contrast with George Perez’s work in “Gods & Mortals” is just jarring here; Perez and later writers (such as Byrne, whose work on the character I find problematic in a lot of respects, did a lot of good in this respect) connect Diana’s lasso with something inherent in her character, her devotion to Truth. When Perez’s Diana faced down the God of War, she couldn’t defeat him physically; instead, she realized that that wouldn’t work, and instead she uses the lasso to show him that if he gets his wish to unleash ultimate war on the world in the nuclear age, he’ll destroy the world, and thus all his worshippers, and, ultimately, he and the other gods will die too. That’s something that nobody else could have done; that’s why it was crucial that Wonder Woman save the world. Superman would have failed there; Batman would have failed; the rest of the JLA would have failed. It’s Diana’s wisdom (sufficient to outreason a god) and her special truth power that save the day.

I mean, it’s great that they depict her as a great combatant, but that’s the bare minimum for any superhero; we go a bit further here by having her and the other Amazons unapologetically use lethal force (suck on that, Geoff Johns), which is a bonus. But, fundamentally, the creators’ answer here for what makes Wonder Woman cool and unique as a superhero is that she beats people up real good. The lasso is just an accessory that they use as fodder for jokes about people telling the truth a la “Liar Liar”, rather than something that says something profound about her.

Maturity is more than just showing blood and making titty jokes; it’s frustrating, when writers have laid the groundwork for a far more adult and intelligent Wonder Woman, one that wouldn’t run afoul of any censor, Timm and his very talented associates seem incapable of taking us there.

I bought this massive, 14-DVD set while in search of video materials to stimulate the the curiosity of a five-year old whose school has been doing a lot of space-related reading and discussion. I wanted to find materials that could build on what she’s already learned, and would be exciting but not too complicated or disturbing. Based on other reviews, I have high hopes for this collection, although I think it may not work (yet) for this young, budding scientist. I plan to review the episodes as I view them, so the review you see here so far is not a complete one. More like a review blog, I guess.

Anyway, the series that this “mega-set” collects are as follows:

“The Universe: The Complete Season One”

“The Universe: The Complete Season Two”

“The Planets”

“How the Earth Was Made”

And here are my reviews:

THE UNIVERSE, SEASON ONE: THE SUN

—————————————

Informative, but sensationalistic. Although many of the visual metaphors help illustrate complex phenomena — billiard balls used to show how atomic particles interact, for example — they are also confusing and misleading in many ways. The real problem, however, is in the overly dramatized, alarmist framing of the narration. One of those oily-voiced announcers, the kind that record political attack ads, tells us over and over of the “deadly” threat of the sun’s “terrible power”, computer graphics show the Earth buffeted by “explosions” of solar energy; at one point an actual shotgun is pointed at a beachball-sized model of the earth and is fired repeatedly, until the ball is destroyed. Yes, solar radiation can disrupt modern telecommunications, but is all the violent hype necessary to explain this? I learned a lot from this episode, but I wouldn’t show it to a young child; it’s simply too disturbing and confusing.

More to come. Stay tuned.

When my daughter and I first found The Universe on the History Channel, we knew it was a set we would have to own. We have been enjoying this set very much and all get so engrossed in each episode that the house could burn down around us. I would recommend it to anyone and feel it is appropriate for all age groups.
