‘The World Of Suzie Wong’ the romanticized story of a Hong Kong prostitute and an American artist is for some, a simplistic racist view of Chinese, for others, a guilty pleasure. Yes, it is both of those things but it is even more. It is a fine and tender love story of two people from very different worlds who overcome pride and prejudice and embark upon a true human experience. Forty four years after its release this film along with ‘Flower Drum Song’ are being re-evaluated and embraced by the Chinese American community. Why? Because beneath the surface of each film they share the common job of telling the story of their time and place with honesty and true humanity and in the case of Suzie Wong, the story is not such a happy one.
At first we are presented in `Suzie Wong’ a stereotypical view of happy little hookers in the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong. But as the story unfolds the veneer of this portrait cracks open to reveal through Suzie just how desperate the lives of these women are. In a city of over three million crammed onto the island city it is a case of do what you must to survive. In Suzie’s case she must compartmentalize her feeling into body, love, and soul and thus protect herself by pretending that she is the daughter of a rich merchant rather than a Wan Chai bargirl. Though her relationship with Robert they both learn the meaning and cost of love in a world of narrow view and prejudice.
The film is very adult and honest in dealing with the subject of the flesh trade and racism in 1960 must have been a bit shocking on several levels. This film must be credited with opening the door to telling more honest stories of Asian’s with Asian actors in the major roles. After all, not too many years before we had Jennifer Jones playing a Eurasian in ‘Love Is A Many Splendored Thing’. She did a fine job, but still she was miscast. Here we have Nancy Kwan creating a memorable character, as it should be, by someone of Asian descent.
Nancy Kwan is luminous in the role of Suzie. This was a star making turn for her and led to other good roles over the years. She is sexy, with a street-smart veneer that covers her open and trusting heart. She rises to the many emotional challenges of Suzie and succeeds in carrying the viewer through the film as only an accomplished actress can. The camera falls in love with her, as does the reluctant Robert.
William Holden is perfectly cast as the “pushing forty” American who has come to Hong Kong to pursue his dream of being an artist. He is a pro who give the role just the feeling of wonder and discovery it needs blended with a certain worldliness that it requires. Together, Kwan and Holden are an intoxicatingly romantic couple that share a chemistry on screen most films of this genre aspire to but few achieve.
The supporting cast is filled out by standouts such as Jacqui Chan as Gwennie Lee, Andy Ho as Ah Tong, Michael Wilding as Ben Marlow and Sylvia Simms as Suzie’s rival, Kay O’Neill.
Geoffrey Unsworth also known for his work on ‘Becket’, ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’ and ‘Cabaret’ stunningly photographed Hong Kong for the film. His use of light and color is unsurpassed in capturing the long gone look of the city in 1960. The art direction of John Box is superb. He is best known for his work with David Lean on ‘Doctor Zhivago’ and ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.
It is all expertly helmed by director Richard Quine who is also responsible for ‘Bell, Book, and Candle’, ‘Strangers When We Meet’ and the delightful ‘How To Murder Your Wife’.
Of special note are the stunningly beautiful paintings of Miss Kwan by artist Liz Moore. They are indeed wonderful and one wishes there had been an addition to the DVD of slides of this artist’s painting for the film.
‘The World of Suzie Wong’ is a film that holds both an important place in film history and the hearts film buffs and romantics around the globe. So on that rainy Saturday afternoon when you need a little romance, drama and travel to a far off land pop in this new DVD of ‘Suzie Wong’ and be carried away.

Nancy Kwan is very beautiful and talented. William Holden shows a side of himself not usually seen, that is, betwixed, off-guard, yet enchanted by Ms. Kwans character. Her character teaches him what Chinese people hold valued although the movie is seen through a Westerner’s eyes. The scenery is extremely captivating, as Hong Kong surely would not look this way again, so the moment in time is a treasure in itself. I watched this movie about 10 times over a month period because I loved the romantic story, the boy meets girl, loses girl formula, the snooty characters and of course William Holden for taking on such an unusual story.

“Desert Hearts,” directed by Donna Deitch, opens in Reno, Nevada in 1959. The film, which is based on a novel by Jane Rule, tells the story of Vivian (played by Helen Shaver), a prim-and-proper college professor who has come to Nevada to get a divorce. There she meets Cay (Patricia Charbonneau), a lusty, free-spirited casino worker. The relationship between these two beautiful women is the focus of the film.

“Desert Hearts” is a wonderful film. It’s very erotic, tender, and moving. The women’s story is complemented by excellent production values and effective use of period music. The performances are superb all around. The leads are backed by a great supporting cast; Audra Lindley is particularly good in a zesty, touching performance as Cay’s stepmother. But it’s the powerful chemistry between Shaver and Charbonneau which ultimately drives the film. Every scene between them is one to be savored.

The DVD version of the film includes a fascinating feature-length commentary track by director Deitch. She discusses the original novel, her own relationship with novelist Rule, the casting process, the music of the film, key scenes, and much more. Particularly fascinating is the window she offers into the financial realities of independent filmmaking.

“Desert Hearts” is about romantic love between two women. It’s also about a mother-daughter relationship and about friendship between women. The beautiful scenes of the land and horses as well as the casino scenes give added appeal to the story of these interconnected relationships. I highly recommend this enjoyable and touching film.

Most people purchasing this item have seen the film. Desert Hearts is a contemporary classic and ahead of it’s time when first released. It’s a standard now in most every gay-girls DVD collection. This newly released two-disc edition includes some bonus materials.

I’ll review the bonus disc as there are plenty of well written reviews of the actual film.

1. The “never before seen footage” of the famous love scene. This is the first bonus item on the extra disc. It is NOT a re-cut extended scene. This is the raw footage from, argueably, the most famous lesbian love scene ever. We are not necessarily given more content, but simply the same content from different angles, over multiple takes.

2. Commentary by director Donna Deitch. Fun and informative.

3. Interviews with the two main stars by director Deitch. To me, this feature is worth the price of this collection. Donna Deitch interviews both Patricia Charbonneau ( Cay ) and Helen Shaver ( Vivian ). These are one-on-one sessions which recall memories of filming and, more importantly, the impact the film had on both actresses. These interview sessions were done in March 2007. The only thing that might have made them more interesting would have been if the actresses had actually been reunited for the interviews. They are each interviewed, separately, by Deitch. While both actresses are fun to watch, it is Helen Shaver and her insights that are the most rewarding.

4. The Theatrical Trailer – This is actually interesting because, while the film hold up strongly, the trailer comes across as rather dated.

All in all, I’d recommend this set. It’s a wonderful film, and the bonus disc will add a nice dimension to viewing it again.

This movie is a must for anyone who loves Mark Twain, Bing Crosby, a good musical, and good family fun.

…you’d think this would be a winner — Bing Crosby at the height of his film popularity, Billy Wilder as director, and the lush scenery of Canada’s Japser National Park. However, despite the truly beautiful restoration by Universal, this is a yawn…and I’m a bit of a Crosby fan. Here, Bing plays a phonograph salesman trying to sell his wares to Austrian royalty. He falls in love with Joan Fontaine, a countess, while his dog falls in love with her dog, who is supposed to mate with the Emperor’s dog. The scenery is just beautiful. The script is ho hum. I sat thinking how could this be Billy Wilder??? Well, I guess the concept is rather anti-class system, so perhaps that’s what attracted Wilder. Aside from that, it’s fluff…albeit pleasant fluff.

On the other hand, “A Connecticutt Yankee In King Arthur’s Court” is much nicer. A nice turn on the old story, with a hoot of a supporting performance by William Bendix (”Life Of Riley”). Crosby is in fine voice and this film has a bit of a heart to it. A nice diversion with Crosby in his cinematic heydey.

Well, If you saw the original then there is no point getting this pointless add-on, just a gimic by the Hughes Brothers to pump more money out of the same product by scraping discarded film-clips from the floor and throwing them together and giving them a new title.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Pimp – Raw Outtakes and The Hard Truth! Click Here

The original was slickly edited to create a rather seemless documentary – in this unfortunate follow-up we see the Pimps as they truly are – unable to create a single coherant sentence. What you’ll hear is one full hour of sentences like, “And then I met this Ho U-know-what-I’m-Sayin, and we were vibing U-know-what-I’m-Sayin and she was trying to play U-know-what-I’m-Sayin so I put my Pimp moves on her U-know-what-I’m-Sayin and soon she was inline with my pimpin U-know-what-I’m-Sayin and it was tight U-know-what-I’m-Sayin”, or you get Rosebudd spending 5 full minutes trying to figure out which hotel one of his hoes was murdered in – extrememly boring stuff.

Ironically, pimps talk about the need to have good verbal skills and all, but after listenting to this it was obvious that most 3 year olds have better verbal skills than they do. Also there was nothing “raw” about this really except that you hear the word that rhymes with witch about 3,000 times, but they already did that in the original. There is a long interview with Snoop Dogg but it’s not very interesting at all, and certainly not enlightening.

As for the soundtrack, I havn’t listened to it yet but you could download those songs from the internet for free so why spend money buying this CD?

All in all this is a very sad effort U-know-what-I’m-Sayin ?

The pimps fill me with shame with how they treat those poor innocent women. But you do have to admit, must be nice to have someone love you so much they sell there bodies for you.Like the Great Bishop Don Juan says. I supply the house the car, the medical care , the clothes ,all she has to do is provide the money. He is right, He is giving Four things. The Bitches are just giving one thing. One of my favorite quotes from the film is “If you said your gonna kill her, you better beat her like you trying to kill her, she is going to test what ever comes out of your mouth” This man Knows Women.Should be shown in all are H.S. So are young Boys will know how to properly interact with the opposite sex and not be manipulated by the little Bitches.Fantastic film , don’t miss it.

This is one of the greatest Godzilla movies ever produced, but this DVD version is far from perfect. Unfortunately, this is just a re-issue of the same DVD released a few years ago. The film transfer is exactly the same as the one previously released by ADV films, which has a recently re-dubbed mono soundtrack. The ADV soundtrack is much inferior to the one originally produced for American International Pictures in 1968, which featured an excellent voice-cast and a different script. Apparently the AIP version can’t be published because the ownership rights are in limbo. Based on the cover notes, I bought this DVD believing it had the original AIP voice-tracks. No such luck. The folks at ADV deliberately stretch the truth. The cover art claims it’s the “50th Anniversary Special Edition”, but Destroy All Monsters was made in 1968, which makes this DVD issue the 36th anniversary for the film (in 2004). The 50th year, is a reference to the first Godzilla movie “Gojira” made in 1954, but the text makes no mention of Gojira or Godzilla. It also claims to contain “The original motion picture and soundtrack”, which is misrepresentation. The original film was Japanese language, and this DVD isn’t even the original English version. I would’ve been a lot less disappointed if they had at least given this version some chapter stops and stereo audio (which there isn’t). There’s not even a menu for this low budget version. If you try to hit the chapter advance button, the movie starts over from the beginning. There’s no menus, no extras, no subtitles, no secondary audio tracks, no trailer, no nothing. The only thing that’s different from ADV’s first issue of this movie, is the cover art and the addition of a music CD. The CD contains 30 mono-audio music tracks from the movie soundtrack. The music score is wonderful, but the audio is not stereo and the fidelity is only fair. My point of contention is that ADV is trying to fool us into believing this movie has the original audio soundtrack, but instead gives you fine-print on the back mentioning an extra music CD. Buyer beware, if you already own the original release of this DVD, don’t be fooled into thinking this is a different version.

For the 50th anniversary of Godzilla, we have a special relelease of Destroy All Monsters on DVD. This in itself is good, and an added attraction is that there’s a second disc — a CD of the soundtrack. But there are two downsides:

— there are no special featuers — not even a theatrical trailer.

— the dub is the poorly acted recent dub from a few years ago. The original dub is not great (what dubs are? Why, oh, why, don’t they also offer subtitled versions), this one is very poorly acted, more so that usual even for these types of films.

Overall, I’d still recommend this to Godzilla fans (and I’ve been one since seeing King Kong vs. Godzilla in its original US showing at the drive-in when I was a kid), but it could have been so much better.

Space Jam teams up His Airness, Michael Jordan, with His Hareness, Bugs Bunny, for a fun, and funny, family film.

Michael Jordan has retired from basketball, and currently playing baseball, when Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes pals ask for his help in playing a b-ball game against diminuative aliens from Moron Mountain. These aliens have stolen the talent of 5 NBA players, including Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing, and are now larger than life. Since this is Looney Tunes Land, this game is NOT your average basketball game. If it was, it wouldn’t be any fun.

Though not an actor of any kind in anyone’s book, Michael Jordan does a very good job of interacting with his cartoon co-stars. Most of the jokes are well done and the basketball game itself is a lot of fun. In addition, it is quite funny to watch the 5 NBA players that had their “games” stolen trying to cope with their newfound ordinaryness.

This movie is not groundbreaking by any means and most all of the original Looney Tunes cartoons are better. But this movie never tries to be more than it is: a good time. And at that, it succeeds very well.

The new “Space Jam” 2-Disc DVD is a fun addition to any Looney Tunes or family DVD collection.

Disc One features the film, which can be enjoyed with commentary from the director, as well as Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. Most DVD commentaries are a bore to sit through–and this one does have its over technical moments (especially if you have young children who “believe in” Bugs or Daffy), but the comments from the characters are very witty–including a jab that Bugs throws at Michael Jordan early in the presentation (concerning his brief baseball career).

Rounding out the first disc is the theatrical trailer of the film (this is almost a MUST with me for any DVD).

The Second Disc is a nice bonus and could have easily been packaged as a stand-alone item. It features a “Making of Space Jam” and several Looney Tunes shorts (from the 1980’s and 1990’s), as well as the 1988 television special, “Bugs vs. Daffy: Battle of the Music Video Stars”. Speaking of music videos, the second disc also features “Fly Like an Eagle” and “Monstars Anthem”.

This is a great gift for any Looney Tunes fan. Folks who liked it as children in 1996 (when the film was released) should still like it as teens. Children who have never seen it will also enjoy it. In short, it’s a keeper.

Well, my very favorite series of all time, Cardcaptor Sakura, has come to an end in its American release. I have to say that this was the absolute perfect way to finish off the series – with a movie. Most of us know that episode 70 of the anime was a total cliff-hanger, and this is what happens.
Four months have passed since Eriol and his ordeals have left for England, and four months had passed since Syaoran told Sakura his true feelings, and yet, she was never able to reply. As life starts turning back to normal for her, the most exciting thing that happens is her getting the part of princess in a festival play.
Eriol’s old house has been demolished, and a new amusement park was built atop the hill where it stood. Underneath the house, the 53rd Clow Card was sealed – a card that has the power to cancel out the other 52 and turn the world to nothingness.
Syaoran gets dragged to Japan by Meiling for the Nadeshiko festival, and Sakura tries to tell him how she feels, and somehow, something’s always in the way! In the end, when everything, including Sakura’s cards starts to dissappear, Sakura must make a choice – give up her most precious feeling, or let the world turn to nothing.

The movie was truly amazingly animated. Everyone still has their true personalities, but somehow, they show a bit more expression. The colors are better, and in all, it’s just better quality than the anime. It’s widescreen, and has two subtitle tracks… However, there was one thing that intruiged me about this disk…
It’s been dubbed, and not by Nelvana. The original Cadcaptors dub totally butchered the story, making it something for little kids. Since they cut out all traces of the S/S relationship, there was no point in dubbing this at all. However, when I played it on the English track, I sure was surprised. The dialog was accurate, the voices were just extremely well picked (especially Sakura-chan!), and I was really impressed! The only complaint I had was the over-use of complete sentences and Yukito’s voice (sadly, Megumi Ogata doesn’t speak English).

Over all, this is worth the money. I was really happy finally getting to watch it after reading various summaries. ^^; Just one thing – I don’t recomend this to anyone that hasn’t seen all of the originally subbed episodes. Even if it’s dubbed, you will be lost. It does not follow the Cardcaptors story.
Anyway, I hope my review heled somewhat. Thanks for reading.

Finally, all the Clow Cards have been transformed into Sakura Cards, Eriol is back in England and Shaoran in Honk Kong. Back in Tokyo, Tomoyo still films Sakura’s awesome powers (and makes sure to create cute little outfits for her as well). Everything seems to be okay until, one day, the house where Eriol used to live in is demolished to build a Theme Park.
The Void Card is now free and willing to do anything in order to get all it’s friends back. Now, Sakura must fight against a Card which is immune to any kind of spell she or her guardians can use. Will Sakura capture this card before it swallows all her friends and the whole city? Can she tell Shaoran how she truly feels before his feelings are erased by the Void card’s power?

Well… I’ve been waiting for this First Season DVD set ever since I ordered the Columbia House video releases of Green Acres (late 1999-2001). Columbia House chose to release the “best” of Green Acres in no particular order, which was disconcerting to a fan. BUT, this new DVD set is released in broadcast order! It’s great to see the development of the characters and it’s quite satisfying to see that by the 14th episode (”What Happened in Scranton”) all the characters have found their niche.

Some of the episodes have a few film scratches, but they are really minor. The sound is brilliant (no scratches there!) and the color VERY vibrant! I remember watching Green Acres re-runs as a kid, and didn’t realize that the hay shoveled by Eddie Albert in the beginning credits was a green color.

Another reviewer mentioned the chemistry between Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor and I must also mention it. Interestingly, upon seeing the two actors names, one would think that Albert and Gabor would have nothing in common and be a disaster, but… something “clicks” between them just right. As the episodes move along, one can see that Eddie and Eva clearly TOTALLY ENJOYED each other and played off each other wonderfully. In fact, watch closely at the conclusion of one of the episodes (I kick myself for not remembering which one), where Eddie and Eva are in bed and Eddie goes to turn off the light (and theoretically conclude the episode). Eva leans over and TICKLES Eddie and he knocks the lamp off the table and he and Eva both laugh in an “out of character” way, all while the scene fades out and the end credits role. You can just see that they had FUN while making these episodes.

The surreal comedy starts to “creep in” to these first season episodes, although it wouldn’t be fully explored until later seasons. By “surreal” I mean where the characters “poke fun” at their own show or others similar. One episode starts with Eb milking Eleanor the cow while humming the theme song to the show! Then at the conclusion he “sings” in Eva’s voice, “Dahling, I love you but give me Park Avenue!” It’s in the later seasons that things like the names of the director and producers appear in the opening credits on Eddie’s towel (as he exits the shower), or appear in the darkness in Eddie and Eva’s bedroom where she asks him who the names are, etc.

So, watch these episodes… enjoy them. And notice that they are really sophisticated “pokes” at society as we know it. Finally… these episodes (well, the ones halfway through the first season and onward) are REALLY FUNNY! Don’t be ashamed to LAUGH OUT LOUD!

Let’s hope MGM releases all the other five seasons!

I won’t attempt to describe the content of the Green Acres TV series except to say it is like a very strange comic book filled with parodies and satire.

I first heard about this DVD in October and I counted down the days until it was available from Amazon. I was expecting a product only slightly better than VHS quality, but I was pleasantly surprized. The video and audio qualities are quite good.

This comes as 2 disks in a moderately deluxe case. There are indeed 32 episodes including the pilot episode. I am sure I have never seen the pilot and despite what it says on the packaging, I have doubts it was ever broadcast. I know I wouldn’t have bought the series based on it. However by Episode 3, the familar format is established.

In order to fit all the content on just 2 disks, the disks are double-sided, double-layered and this might be the cause of some problems with some DVD players. As other reviewers have mentioned, the selection menu requires you to select and view each episode separately. On my cheap DVD player I could only select the first episode on each side. However, there was no problem selecting all the content when I viewed the disks on my computer DVD drive.

I think this DVD set is bargain when compared with the pricing of newer TV series DVDs and I would like to see more of this content available.

Each night I turned on the HBO feature anxious to see a good dramatic series, and learn about my country’s struggle for life through one its most underrated founding fathers, John Adams.

Buy,Download, Or Stream John Adams! Click Here

Paul Giamatti’s performance in the title role is much in dispute as he, like many other actors, seems to play himself as much as his character. He turns from a loving father to the lawyer and representative who sometimes looks apoplectic rather than just an angry or fiery patriot. Much to his credit, I felt the John Adams of later years on subsequent episodes was extremely well-acted.

Abigail Adams is played by Laura Linney, and her performance is superb and not the least in dispute. From the first moment, she is thoroughly credible as the vivacious lover, friend, confidante, advisor, and wife of John Adams. Her acting here should garner her an Emmy. The actors protraying Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson turned in stellar performances.

Buy,Download, Or Stream John Adams! Click Here

Many complain that this did not follow the book of the same title, and was not true to history exactly. To the first query the answer is what does? To the second, it is a well-written and well-acted drama that deserves our attention.

The series begins with the Boston Massacre and John Adams representing the British soldiers. With his successful defense, he is noticed by the Crown and the colonials who are striving for independence. Adams chooses independence over service to the king and we see him as representative, foreign minister, beggar and borrower, ambassador, vice president, and president. His one anchor through these assignments and occupations in the struggle of a new nation is his love and respect for his wife, Abigail whom he always refers to as “my friend.” The letters between the two is one constant that sustains their love through loneliness of separation, as Mr. Adams is more often away than home.

Particularly touching is the drab existence they share in an uncompleted White House, the grief John Adams suffers from the loss of his Abigail, his renewed friendship with Thomas Jefferson, and his dying belief that his friend survives him, even though Jefferson died three hours earlier. In one of the ironies of our history, both men died exactly fifty years to the day, after July 4, 1776.

This story ends with both Abigail and John Adams quoting letters of their love for each other and a young nation, as they ascend a hill together and look out over their country. They hope that they will be able to see future generations of Americans, from heaven, and wonder if they will deserve the sacrifice and freedom they have given them.

So do I.

I read David McCullough’s GREAT book in anticipation of this miniseries. McCullough painted a picture of a man and a time that I found fascinating; a picture of a hardworking, sensitive (maybe mildly obsessive-compulsive in terms of his emotional high and lows) genius. I found the first few episodes excellent, albeit different from the book. It is the last few episodes that have really affected my view on this series.

The series insists on focusing on Adams’ lows. It seems the writers took all the depressing elements of McCullough’s book, which were few, and magnified those to center stage. For instance, John Adams’ alcoholic son Charles has a major part in the series, but played a relatively minor role in the book. The mudslinging between Jefferson and Adams in Adams’ second election for president was jettisoned for the Charles Adams storyline. Also, Adams, presented by McCullough, was a good natured man with a self-deprecating sense of humor. In the series he seems to live in misery.

They also took scenes that were generally upbeat and made them darker. When Adams meets King George III (in my opinion the climax of the story – or at least the first half of the story) in the book, the King is very polite and friendly (much like his portrayal in The Madness of King George III). He smiled a lot and made Adams more comfortable, if not less in awe. In the series the King is just plain weird. I can only guess the filmmakers were hinting at King George’s future illness/madness. It’s almost as if this series is based on another book about John Adams – a darker book. This series really missed the tone of McCullough’s great book.

Still — divorcing myself from the book — I find this series is well-made and held my attention. Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney are very good. My advice would be to watch the series first, then read the book for a much more uplifting story.

This DVD leads us through time to examine the strength of the Earth¡¦s magnetic field through various perspectives, from potteries to volcano rocks. It also briefly describes the consequences of Earth without the protection of the magnetic field, how Earth generates the magnetic field, and when the next reversal of magnetic field occurs.

I find that the information on the DVD is not detailed enough. However, the PBS website (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/) gives me a better understanding of the Earth¡¦s magnetic field.

This is an entertaining, informative, and even-handed look at the Earth’s magnetic field, how it has changed over time, what it is doing now, and what it all might mean.

The computer graphics used are interesting and effective, but the most interesting part was the (previously unknown to me) magnetic history stored in volcanic rock. Some of the conclusions they draw from this work can really make you think.

Although documentary DVDs are usually not very cost effective, giving you a (if you’re lucky) 1-hour program for the price of a 2-hour blockbuster movie, this one is worth a try. And as the Earth’s magnetic field continues to change (it’s clearly in the midst of a fast-moving decline right now), this could be a good source of entertaining info to review later.
